Separate Install Questions
How do I install two copies of Calibre?
Also as of Calibre 2.20 every time I download rar files they show up with the Calibre logo on them and E-PUBS have a little green arrow on them did the update do that? If so can it be disabled? |

Generally speaking one does not install two copies of a program. Although it is possible to install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of calibre. They will share the configuration.
You can also use calibre portable, distributed through calibre's website or via the portableapps.com launcher. Re: the icons. calibre recently gained the ability to associate with files it handles via file browser ==> Open With. But only on Windows 8 which should ask what you want the default to be. ![]() Last edited by eschwartz; 02-24-2015 at 09:21 PM. |

Probably windows flakes out if there is more than one program that claims it can handle rar files. You can (probably) restore its previous behavior by using the registry editor to delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Classes\.rar and then re-installing 7-zip. Although, since this is windows, who knows.
I'll change calibre to not advertise that it can handle rar files (although it can) to prevent this from happening again with future calibre upgrades. |

Well, the default on Windows 7 here is staying with 7-Zip for me, for both RAR and ZIP... although I used the calibre-debug command to have calibre advertise itself -- calibre.exe is still the secondary option.

The problem isn't the default program. Probably 7-zip does something to make windows explorer open RAR files as folders. That something does not survive having another program advertise it can support RAR.

7-Zip opens archives in its own personal file browser -- does that count?

No, the OP is claiming that 7-zip causes *Windows explorer* to open rar files as folders, similar to the manner in which it opens zip files as folders by default.

That is interesting, I don't know of any way to do such a thing?

I dont either, but advertising support for archive files is not important for calibre, so I simply disabled it to be on the safe side.

AFAIK no version of Windows ships with native support for RAR (including Win10). Some file managers have built in support for RAR and 7z (eg Total Commander and maybe Directory Opus), unsure if they add a shell handler that Windows Explorer can use though.
7zip v 9.20 doesn't add anything to Windows Shell to make RAR's show up as folders, maybe its in the 9.38 beta. BR |
