Please help

I dropped my kobo this morning and although it didn't break it no longer will allow me to put new books in it and my computer says it needs to be scanned and fixed, but it won't complete the process.

Anyway I need a new ereader and was wonder what I can do. I don't want a Kindle because I have a massive book (and some of the files are really big) collection and I honestly hate the Kobo because of how glitchy the software is. Is there another option out there for me? I do want to be able to to keep my collection with me wherever I go since that was the main draw of an ereader.
Eink is a must becasue I spend hours reading and a tablet is really hard on my poor eyes.
I live in Canada so the Nook isn't an option.

I was also wondering if it was at all possible to connect a usb stick to the Kindle like I do with my tablet (with a OTH cable)

Thanks for any help you can offer and sorry I'm so picky

Did you have all your books downloaded? Or are they just at Kobo?
No, on the usb stick on kindles.
You would have to convert your entire library for the kindle.
I have heard Onyx are good ereaders.

Sony has a Reader.
They did away with the Selling of eBooks but you buy them thru Kobo so no problems with reading the books you have on the Sony.

Were you running the latest software? The more recent firmwares for the devices they've put out for the last 3 or 4 years are all in all quite stable and not at all the glitch fests some of the earlier firmwares were.

If Kindle, Nook and Kobo are out then you'd have to look at some of the third party devices that aren't tied to stores. AFAIK you're only option would be to order them online site unseen as no one locally sells them in Canada or the US. Those manufacturers would be ones like Onyx, Pocketbook and Boyue.

If you decide want help potentially fixing this you can try posting in the Kobo forums here. There are quite a few individuals who are knowledgeable about Kobo's and things to try to fix them.

I'm curious about what is actually happening, but that's probably a thread for the Kobo forum.

How "massive" is the collection?

What format books are you talking about? "Really big" usually means comics. It;s agoo idea to mention what formats you are using as that does affect what the best device is.

Again, more a topic for the Kobo forum, but some of what people call glitches or bug are actually design decisions for the manufacturer. Knowing what your problems are can help eliminate alternative devices.

As has been suggested, you are pretty much down to the Android e-ink devices. You could also try Koreader or Coolreader on a Kobo. Either will get you away from the Kobo interface.

I emailed Sony a few months ago ...their answer was Epub Mobi & several other formats would work. I Didn't go any farther cause the Price was WAYYY out of my price range. I suggest you make sure before you buy.

You probably do NOT want the one that Katie linked to. As AnemicOak rightly points out, Katie's link is to the $800 Sony Reader.

Go with Kobo (which I see that you hate) or with Amazon's Kindle. There's plenty to choose from, and in a price that's flexible to your wallet.

All my books are on my computer, so I've not lost anything.
My cousin from Denmark had one, he didn't really like it.

I was running the latest software. My kobo would freeze suddenly, then restart. Freeze again, then restart. This would happen once or twice a week.

Like I said above my cousin didn't like the Onyx, the other two, I'd have no idea were to get one and since the Canadian dollar is kind of weak I was hoping not to have to go out of the county.

I've read through every forum that might have something to do, I did all the the suggestions and nothing. I can read the books I already have, but I can't sideload anything.

My collection is around 8 thousand books.
All books are epub, I don't read comics. They are really long books, I have around 20 that are over a thousand pages long and a few that are almost 2 thousand.

Like I said I've tried everything from the kobo forum, nothing.

As for the software, I can't even get the kobo to link to my computer anymore, I think something was damaged inside when it fell.

Yeah, I'd love to get that but $800 is quite a bit over my budget.

Which Kobo do you have? If you can open it, you can get an image of the SD card and fix it. And if need be, you can buy another SD card to put the image on and have your Kobo up and running.

The firmware for Kobo Readers is not glitchy. You probably have an old version and updating to the latest will solve these glitches.

Sony eink readers can be had on Ebay but be aware that they are several years old now and battery life varies.

That's not many really. It's bigger than average, but not uncommon. My Glo HD currently has about 2500 and I don't bother trying to keep everything on it.

Again, not really that big or uncommon. At a very quick count, I can see at least 40 books with more that 1000 pages in my library. And at least ten at more than 2000. And that doesn't include the paper books that I haven't replaced with ebooks.

None of my Kobo ereaders have any problems with any of these books. I can think of reasons that longer books cause problems, but that is because the books are badly constructed. These will have problems on all devices. Cleaning the books up will probably solve the problems.
Quote:

In that case, why didn't you post and report what was going on? Someone might have had another idea. And my experience that we get lots of posts saying they tried everything and he problem gets fixed with a few posts.
Quote:

You don't say what model of Kobo you have. Unless it is an Aura or an N905 Touch, you can open it and reimage the internal SD card. Or replace the card with a newer one. Though I would try another computer and/or cable first. I could be an issue there. And make sure you restart the device before trying.

And has something changed? Your first post said the PC prompted to fix the filesystem and the couldn't. If the device is no longer detecting the PC, then it might be damage to the USB port. But, it would also be worthwhile to do a factory reset. That solves a lot of problems.

In any case, the options are limited for a replacement device. The suggestions for the alternative software were a suggestion for if you like the Kobo device but didn't want to run the Kobo software.

Mine is glitchy. For example, the other day, I went to use it (Glo HD), and the red light under the power button was on; powered it on and put it back to sleep, the red light was gone. Not to mention the occasional lockups. I am using old firmware, but after using Kobos for several years, I've found that updating the firmware tends to move the glitches around.
