When I last checked, the great majority of the reviewer-commentators on the Site said "junk." It was about a 3-to-4 ratio.

The giveaway did produce something nice--several of the reviewer-commentators (as they usually do) gave some free alternatives (aside from just Calibre). I want to check them out. I feel sure that none of them are better than Calibre, though, except for maybe in one or two specific operations.

Last time I looked it couldn't output RTF. Can it both input and output HTML ?

This giveaway is advertized as "can decrypt and convert from: [...] and even public libraries". Okay, technically there is nothing in the design of Alf's tools that will recognize and reject library books, but he certainly doesn't advertize that kind of blatant theft!

This is an extra despicable example.

I tried it because it allegedly could convert pdf files better than Calibre. Tried with a couple, one came out total rubbish and the other no different from Calibre. In fact, taking that one into Mobipocket reader to get a .prc file, then running it thru Calibre for an epub and taking the epub into Sigil to tidy it up seems to be the best way I've found to convert it.

But the one that consistently gives me garbage no matter what I do, well I guess that's just gonna have to stay in my Cannot Be Converted folder. But at least I can read it in Adobe on the computer -- even on a 10 inch tablet pdfs just suck for us bad eyesight/nearly no eyesight folks. :-(

Considering that they appear, like other products before and after, to illegally use calibre as their backend to convert stuff, it is a surety that they will never be better...

Gee, what a surprise. The paid ebook-converter-and-all-in-one-DeDRM program that casually rips off Alf's work and sells it, and recommends you steal library books, is also in violation of the GPLv3 because they rip off calibre too.

Not that I approve of their actions but it is (in a way) a backhanded compliment that at least they steal (programming) from the best. You can't find a better storage/ebook converter than Cailbre I tjhink. And Alf's work is useful for helping to back up books that a person has purchased so they don't have to just rely on the cloud alone (if they don't want to). Still I agree that they shouldn't be marketing the work of others as their own and making a profit to boot. Kovid offers Calibre for free and of course Alf can't legally sell his/her work so why should these people benefit from it?

I'm sure that you must have misunderstood. All Chinese companies, including the one which produced this software, uphold only the highest ethical standards and would never be guilty of that, or hacking computers in the U.S., or product piracy, or any of those bad things.
