Not happy

Hate to make my very first post her a whinge, but...

Really not happy.

I have been using Calibre for ages, and recently updated to the latest version. Now, whenever I start it, it totally freezes my system - mouse will no longer respond to commands. System is Win8 (NOT 8.1)

If anyone can tell me a quick way around this, it'd be great. However, I strongly suspect a basic incompatibility, and I will have to download some earlier version of Calibre or search around for another program to do my conversions.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, one suggestion is to upgrade to Windows 8.1, it really is better then Windows 8.

I run Windows 8.1 on my Surface Pro 2 and it runs very well. I use it with Classic Start Menu and 8GadgetPack along with Windows 8.1. I have no problems at all with that setup. I don't see why you are so against Windows 8.1 and want to stick with Windows 8. I see no reason not to go to Windows 8.1 from 8.

Windows 8.1 was a major improvement over 8. No idea why you would not want that.

Anyway, I assume you already checked all the logs and events?

Also, seeing as Microsoft hasn't released any security patch for Windows 8 ever since 8.1 came out, there is actually every reason to upgrade.

Therefore, I'd first correct any problem you have with upgrading before trying to correct problems with Calibre.

(It's basically the first step to any software troubleshooting: Go to latest patches, then see if the problem persists. Exceptions may apply. Netasq, I'm looking at you.)

And silly me, here I thought Windows 8 was the "upgrade" to avoid at all costs. After that, what is 8.1 in comparison?

It even fixes some minor problems. I certainly haven't heard that you lose anything else moving from Win8 to Win8.1 ...

Sound principles in general. However, I shouldn't think that calibre has changed in any meaningful way from minor version to minor version that would cause an unpatched Win8 to totally FUBAR. It is most likely some other program reacting in a catastrophic manner.

And for the record, my money is always on the antivirus.

What version of calibre were you running before you updated to latest version?

You could go back to that version. Downloads are here ==>> Previous calibre releases

You'll need to uninstall the installed version (2.19 ?) using Control Panel, you won't lose anything (preferences, PIs, libraries) but to be sure you could follow this procedure ==>> How do I backup calibre?

Then you could install latest Portable and see if it works.

BetterRed, many thanks, I think I'll try that solution. In the meantime, I am using Adobe Digital Editions very successfully to do the thing I used to use Calibre for - viz convert documents I have written to epub format.

For those who urge me to upgrade to Win 8.1 I really don't think this is the forum to discuss it in detail. Suffice to say I have tried it on work and home PCs and loathe it totally, for various reasons, mainly concerned with bugginess, slowness and its refusal to run many programs that work fine on Win8. I should mention that I am one of those rare birds who actually LIKES Win8, though I did need to muck around with the "formerly-known-as-metro" interface to improve its looks a bit. I am, however, very grateful for the attempts to give well meaning advice.

I have to say, if you are having issues with Win 8.1 like you mention, then either your Win 8 install is gummed up and you need a fresh install or your hardware is flaky and you need fix it or replace it. You see, if you cannot run Windows 8.1, you won't be able ot run Windows 10 or any other future version. I've been using Windows 8.1 on two laptops and a Surface Pro 2 with none of the issues you've mentioned.

Since Win 8.1 isn't working, mybe whatever is gumming up the works for Win 8.1 is lso gumming up the works for Win 8. What processor does our computer have?
