SD card scan time
I just got a PRS 505 today and I have quite a few books on it and I was wondering how long the reader usually takes to scan memory cards for books and add them to the book list. I've got probably in the neighborhood of 1500 files, some are lrf but most are text documents.
Thanks in advance, Dave EDIT: nvm. approx 20 minutes if anyone's interested. Last edited by hoodaman; 06-22-2008 at 12:11 AM. Reason: found the answer |

For my 170 books it's about 2 mins for a full, first time start-up.

It takes a long time with the SD card. I can't recall since using the SDcard in my 500 slowed down page turns significantly, even in books which were stored in the main memory and not on the SD card.
But it was a looooong time when I would put books on the SD card and then start the 500 afterwards. At one point, when I was foolish to put an astronomical number of books on the SD card, it was so long I thought the thing was broken. But I decided to wait a while longer and it finally started working properly. That, combined with the lack of collections for books on the SD card or Memory Stick (wasn't that much faster than the SD card) which made browsing for a book to read a lot more difficult, convinced me to live with only the 300 or so books I can fit in the main memory and stop using the memory cards. |

The least amount of books the better, I don't even use a memory card on my Sony. The Mrs has her Kindle crammed full of books and suffers a bit of performance hit I think

Just use the connect software to throw books on the SD-card and your reader don't need to scan and format the books...

We have discussed this a couple of times before and i think the general consensus was that the price of SD cards are so cheap is to buy several and spread the Load. I have several SD cards and have them compiled by Author...thats my preference and probably have no more than 70 to 120 on any one card....and in a couple of minutes max they are ready to be read. Prior to that I have over 1900 books on a combination Sony stick and a 2 gig SD card and it took a Looooooooooooooooooooog time to compile and be ready to be read.
Hope this insight helps. |
