PRS-T1 firmware update on Windows 8

I have a Windows 8 64 machine, when I try to run the updater for firmware it says "This app can't run on your PC". The reqs for the updater are both 32 and 64 bit versions. I have tried compatibility mode in windows and it does nothing. Anyone have ideas?

The instructions for updating the ereader using a Linux computer should work for you, too.

Unzip the downloaded firmware .EXE file.

Plug the device in via USB and mount the /media/READER folder.

Copy the unzipped "PRS-T1 Updater.package" file to the /media/READER folder on the device.

Unmount the USB filesystem after the copy has finished.

Make sure the battery is well charged. Running out of charge during the update would be a disaster.

Power off the device. Then hold down both the Home and Menu buttons, and press the power button.

Release the buttons after the device shows its boot screen

When the update is complete, the device will reboot itself.

This makes sense. I moved the updater.exe file to the device but it does nothing other than turn on when I do the 3 button press and hold.

Update: realized it wasn't fully off. powered it off completely to a blank screen but the 3 button only starts it as normal. Do I need to extract something from the updater.exe file?
Also when I mount via USB it shows two drives, one called READER. do I put it in the root of this Reader drive?

Have you tried running the updater as "Run as administrator"?

Yes, as I wrote above, you have to unzip the updater.exe file (it is a self-extracting zip file), and copy over the file called "PRS-T1 Updater.package" that is in the zip file. You can use any unzip program to unpack the downloaded file. The READER folder is the one to copy to.
