Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth by Tamar Myers (SYKM) is the 1st in her very popular Pennsylvania Dutch series of Amish Bed & Breakfast cozy mysteries (SYKM says Mennonite, but the actual interior of the book claims they're Amish, so YMMV if you perceive a large difference between these two denominations) with recipes, which is still ongoing at 19 books to this day, with the latest out from HarperCollins, free courtesy of the author publishing consortium NYLA, who are e-printing it from the 1994 Signet paperback release.
NB: despite the apparent setting, these are not religious in nature and the Amish-ness seems to be more of a tourist theme thing than actually taking place within one of the dedicated get-away-from-the-modern-world communities. This is part of some sort of ongoing 1st-in-series promotion in the iTunes Canada store, and one of the handful of titles which don't appear to be purely self-pub. The other backlist reprint books in the series appear to be couponable @ Kobo, incidentally. Currently free @ iTunes (available to Canadians and also apparently mostly worldwide, when I spot-check countries like Denmark; but not Iceland) & thence price-matched @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK, and probably any other place where you can do Report A Lower Price) And this has been the (belated) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Because this one is actually out from an author that I've read and mildly liked for one of her other series (the Den of Antiquity ones which were overall too cutesy for my taste, but did have some fun moments), so it's nice to be able to post a freebie from an author I've kind of enjoyed in the past and hope you might, too. Also, it comes with recipes, so bonus points, especially if it turns out you don't care for the story but do like the food. Enjoy! Description This debut mystery introduces Magdalena Yoder, prim, proper, and persnickety proprietor of the PennDutch Inn, where guests luxuriate in the true “Amish experience,” (read: doing Magdalena’s chores and paying top dollar for the opportunity!). When one of her more reclusive guests takes a tumble down the PennDutch’s picturesquely steep staircase and breaks his neck, the timing couldn’t be worse. It’s the start of hunting season – and her inn is packed to capacity! What at first seems to be a horrible accident (and insurance nightmare for Magdalena!) could turn out to be a much more sinister event; and when another mishap occurs, Magdalena is certain there is a killer in her group – and it’s up to her to sniff out the culprit…before the world’s most incompetent town sheriff throws her in jail! Readers will delight in this laugh-out-loud cozy mystery debut – and relish the country cooking recipes included. Last edited by ATDrake; 01-03-2015 at 04:27 PM. |
