Unanimous Verdict in Apple's favor re iPod

Delivering a unanimous verdict today, the group said Apple's iTunes 7.0, released in the fall of 2006, was a "genuine product improvement," meaning that new features (though importantly increased security) were good for consumers. Plaintiffs in the case unsuccessfully argued that those features not only thwarted competition, but also made Apple's products less useful since customers could not as easily use purchased music or jukebox software from other companies with the iPod.

Glad to see the verdict. I never could understand why it went to court in the first place.

Why isn't there a class action suit against Microsoft? They don't allow us to install whatever we choose on a Windows computer. Or Amazon... Why can't I legally install Google Play on the Fires?

If consumers didn't want the products they wouldn't buy them. Any way, who was to decide what the iPods were actually worth retail?

It's like saying I'm being overcharged if I buy a laptop for $1499 when I could go buy one for $249. It's the consumers' choice what to buy and at what price.

The issue wasn't the lockdown per se, but that it was implemented via an update that blocked content that was previously accessible.
All those systems you mention started with lockdown.

Not that it mattered in this case: without plaintiffs they had no case anyway.

They scraped up a replacement plaintiff from arstechnica readership when Apple found their plaintiffs weren't valid.

Still.

I hate DRM but this was a pretty badly executed/argued/justified lawsuit.

It originally stemmed from issues two customers said they had taking their paid music library to devices made by other companies, as well as not being able to use songs they paid for in other stores on their iPods.

iPods is in decline. You can no longer find dedicated shelf space for iPods today, maybe just a single or two iPods on display at the stores. Years back, you can see people carry two devices: a cell phone and an iPod. Nowadays, people would listen to music from their cell phone.

Not my returns. Whereas I differ strongly with Apple's MO, I had never doubted their ability to take money from its customers.

You do understand that returns (i.e. quarterly returns, the finacial figures such as profit, incomes, units sold, etc...) is a totally different thing than the stock prices. The stock market is down quite a bit overall over the last week or so. Apple has a long history of their stock price going down while they announce record profits.
