Sony Reader file location question.....

I used to have a PRS-500...sold it several months back...ordered a new 505...now i'm wondering a couple things....

i bought several books via the old reader...no idea what format they were in (sony default format?) or where they would be located......so what extnesion do i use when searching my hard drive for the files (or what area do i look)

also is my account with sony's ebook site (no idea what that is now either) active still so that i could download those books if i wanted to?

If you bought the books from sony then look for an .lrx extension. Other, non-drm'd books may have an lrf extension.
The Sony books are typically stored in My Documents/My Books/ebook library and/or My Documents/My Books/Connect Reader.

Your account will still be active and it should be possible to either add your new Reader to your old account or vice versa.

You account is setup with your email address... so I'm assuming you know what the is. If you don't know the password there is a recovery option on this eBook login page.

You will need to register your computer again, if it's not already. Once you do that you can re-download your books if needed. Once you are logged in just click on "Account" in the upper right corner, The click on "View and Download Purchased Books" link in the Transaction History and Credits section.

krighton--You can download the Sony eBook Library software from http://ebookstore.sony.com/downloadclient.html if you want to get started before your new reader arrives.

Enjoy your new 505!!

Did you dis-authorize your original 500 before you sold it? If not, then you've lost one of your potential 6 devices to authorize for your Sony Connect account. You will need to authorize your new device when it comes before you will be able to read your .lrx books on it.

Not necessarily. There's nothing to prevent the questioner from accessing his account today, and de-authorising the original PRS500.

Absolutely right - you don't have to have the Reader connected in order to "de-authorise" it; you just need to be logged in to Connect via your account.

That's good to know -- I hadn't investigated it since authorizing my 500 in March '07, but wasn't sure if it could be de-authorized without being connected.

I have a question, then. I thought de-authorizing meant that books from that account wouldn't work on that device anymore. If the device can be deauthorized without being connected, than any DRM files already on that device can still be read. Perhaps a glitch in their DRM reasoning? One could fill the device with purchased books, sell the device, deauthorize it and still have 5 new readers (plus the 1 computer necessary to load the books) on which to load the purchased books again.

An intriguing question. But I expect that the books would vanish as soon as anyone atttempted to re-authorise the de-authorised device.
