Non DRM ePub recognised as having DRM

I have been reading an epub (created from pdf) on my H20, and editing with Sigil on the way, so it is definitely without DRM. The H20 suddenly stopped changing font size, although it had been working fine previously in the same book, so after deleting and reloading the book (via Calibre) with no effect, I powered off and then switched on my H20. Now I can't even open the book as it says it is protected by Adobe DRM when I know for a fact that is has no DRM. I have tried converting to AZW3 and back to epub but the problem remains. Has anybody ever had this happen to them? If so, is there a solution? I am on holiday and I really want to continue reading this book!

Wow. Now that's a problem with DRM I'd never anticipated. Sorry I can't help with a solution - I can't imagine how it's happenig in the first place.

I've had the message about DRM come up when I had some mistake in the book's code. I don't remember what exactly, but I think it was some problem in the OPF. Have you validated the epub? Use Sigil's validator, calibre's checking tool and epubcheck.

Thanks Jellby. The epub did have errors that I have now corrected - according to both FlightCrew and Epubchecker it is fine. I removed the book from my device using Calibre, ejected and unplugged device, reconnected to Calibre and sent book, ejected and unplugged device but I still have the same problem that it thinks the book has DRM. Any further suggestions are very welcome.

Delete the book using the device. Then restart it. Then connect to the PC and send the book again. That will probably fix it.

Thanks for the idea but no, it didn't. The strange thing is that when I delete the book from the device and then connect to Calibre, the book shows as still being present on the device and I have to delete it from within Calibre as well.

I've ended up changing the title of the book both in the document name and inside the epub and it now works perfectly. I've even tried changing it back to the original title & name (no other changes) and then it went back to finding DRM. I don't know what is going on but am going to give up and just finish the book while I can.

Sounds like it might be the book with the original title has a database entry that has the book as DRM infected. Deleting the original title, using Nickel's functions, as davidfor recommended, should have removed the original probably corrupted data entry. It would be interesting to see if you have two database entries for that book, one with the original title (and DRM) and one with your new title (without DRM). As a more drastic measure, you could try logging out of your Account, in Nickel's settings and rebuilding the database. I would use the tools in calibre to check the integrity of the database, first though.

Luck;
Ken

Checking device database in Calibre shows quite a few errors. Is the only way to correct this by logging out of Kobo account and then in again? Is there anything else I need to do? I have no books purchased from Kobo, they are all side loaded via Calibre. I will probably leave doing this until I am home with my own computer and proper internet access.

Unless you have a backup of the database, no other option save a logout / reset up of the device

Sorry bout that

I don't use the stock readers or allow the Nickel database to access the ebooks on my AuraHD. So, it has been a long time since I have had to deal with database corruption.

I had this happen to me when I used epubmerge on joining a whole series of books by one author - all public domain stuff.

It worked fine on my Amazon ebook readers, but not a single Kobo would open the file. It was protected by DRM, when I know for a fact that none of these individual ebook files contained DRM.

I gave up and went to the bathroom.

I had a similar issue a while back with a public domain epub I'd downloaded.

I just ran it through Calibre and did an epub -> epub conversion and put the new book on my kobo.

Copy the problematical file from Calibre's library to somewhere else.

Leave the original folder and file where it is.

Fix up the copy with Sigil, but change the name of the book slightly - for instance put a random character at the end.

Re-import it back into Calibre. Calibre will think it's a different book and create a new folder in the library.

Delete the original problematical book from within Calibre, and delete it from your reader.

Correct the name of the new book by editing its metadata, then export it to your reader.

Job done.

Read!!
