The Saxon Chronicles series by Bernard Cornwell (The Last Kingdom, The Pale Horseman, The Lords of the North, Sword Song)

The Long Ships by Frans G. Bengtsson - Highly recommend this one.

The Vikings, by Edison Marshall, is a classic of that genre. It is the book that the 1958 film was based on - the one with Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas. But the book is much more historically accurate than the film.

I don't know if it is currently available anywhere. It is many years since I read it.

If you want a classic piece of literature (rather than genre fiction), I wholeheartedly recommend this book:

"The Long Ships," by Frans G. Bengtsson.

Either Amazon or Kobo (can't remember which one) had a great price on this book recently.

You are right of course. I read the entry from jgaiser too fast.
I thought of The Warlord Chronicles also by Cornwell, but it is an Arthurian series. Also highly recommended.

Judson Roberts' Strongbow Saga. The author went to great pains to be historically accurate, especially with regard to weapons, etc.
