Why can't I email AZW3 to my Kindle Voyage?

I get an email saying the AZW3 can not be delivered and the message below in the email. Why can't AZW and AZW3 be delivered if it is supported?

If you had sent mobi format, it would have worked. The message you got is pretty clear. The service doesn't support azw or azw3.

You'd have to ask Amazom why its not allowed, it just isn't.

I suspect because Amazon is really slow at updating that functionality.

Note: It is apparently now possible to email a dual MOBI, which is the proper way to handle Kindles and will be split into AZW3 for supprted devices, but the cover will not show up in the Cover View.

What do you mean by dual mobi? Do you mean to select both when picking the mobi output format in calibre?

Preferences ==> Conversion ==> Output Options ==> MOBI Output (tab)
MOBI file type: old/both/new -- select "both".

One important thing to note, though: if (as I do), you use a Calibre plugboard to append series information to a book title, plugboards don't work with the dual Mobi format.

What's the difference between dual MOBI and AZW3? I've been side loading azw3 instead.

Dual Mobi is a single file containing the book in both the old Mobi7 and the newer KF8 format. An AZW3 file is a pure KF8 file.

To add to what HarryT said, it exists so you can use one file which displays on any Kindle, and shows AZW3 formatting on supported devices but otherwise falls back on MOBI formattig for older devices.

It's a format that's intended for use when uploading books to Amazon. When Amazon's server subsequently sends the book to a device or app, it will send only the Mobi or KF8 version of the book, according to the capabilities of the target device or app.

That (renaming and all other metadata edits for dual mobi) is something that should have been addressed long time ago by Kovid

Calibre is Open Source; if you want something fixing, I'm sure Kovid will happily accept a patch from you.

Calibre is a free program, one that is distributed free by his generosity and by the work of other people involved in the continuation and updating of this program.

Most people would be gracious - rather than critical - in tone.

You are certainly free to develop your own patch...and perhaps rethink your tone when showing appreciation for the hard work that comes from other people.

Implementing modification of both header sets is not extremely complex - AFAIK Kovid is accepting patches about this feature.

Main problem: MOBI is... fragile. Testing/QA this type of changes is pain in the ass.
