Recommendations for an LotR fan - not necessarily fantasy
My mum is a massive LotR fan, is very fond of the story and the characters and the general themes of the book. I'm looking for recommendations of similarly epic stories with high stakes involved and good triumphing over evil. I'm not awfully well versed in high fantasy but what I want to avoid is anything with graphic violence of any kind, or any overt/graphic sexual or other content like that as the total escapist/innocent air of LotR is part of what she likes about it. Also anything that brings the magic system to the fore isn't her cup of tea - she tried Sabriel and other similar things and was put off by the prominence of the magic system - "a wizard did it" type magic (if any) would be more suitable.
Does anyone have any recommendations? It doesn't need to be fantasy, just epic in scale, though a fantastical element would probably help. |

Finding any epic fantasy with as little sex/romance in it as The Lord of the Rings is probably impossible.
I don't remember anything explicit in The Belgariad series by David Eddings but it has been some time since I read it. Magician (the Riftwar Saga) by Raymond E. Feist might also suit. But again, it's some time since I've read the series. Not quite such 'high fantasy' but perhaps The Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin. (& the next two sequels) So You Want To Be A Wizard? by Diane Duane (& lots of sequels) The Misenchanted Sword by Lawrence Watt-Evans (& lots more in the same universe) |

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (and finished by Brandon Sanderson).
Its a big sweeping fate of the world story but not really all that dark/violent/sexual. There are 14 long books. First book is The Eye of the World |

Thanks for all the responses! Of the suggestions, The Dark is Rising, Belgariad, the Tad Williams, and possibly the Feist and McKillip sound like exactly what I'm looking for. I'll probably have a look at them before I recommend anything to her. I'm still open to other suggestions though - like I said it doesn't have to be high fantasy.

And when you get to the one that describes taking place in about 5 minutes (or so), you then want to give up.

Hey, Gang:
is the Dark Is Rising series suitable for an 11-year old boy? Has read the HP's and is finishing up Rick Riordan's series, the one about the son of Poseidon, et al. Promised to send him some DT books (his folks don't allow e-readers!), and am wracking my brain to ensure that I don't send anything inappropriate or above his reading level. Seems like a bright enough kid, folks lean heavily Christian in their personal belief system. Yes, I've already asked if he's read Chronicles, the Golden Compass books...so am now considering the Harper Hall Trilogy from McCaffrey, the Dark Is Rising quintology, and a few others. Suggestions welcome. He apparently favors fantasy over sci-fi and likes heavier (thicker) books within at least trilogies. I'm trying to avoid ANY overt graphic sexuality, which is the only reason I haven't already sent him Dragonflight to start him down that path. (I know, I know--I've even had a personal correspondence with Anne, about...15-20 years ago?...and I know she considers DOP sci-fi, not fantasy, but, hey, telepathic dragons? Cool enough, I'd think, for him when he's getting on about 13, mostly due to the "riders mate when dragons do" thing.) TIA for any ideas, Hitch |
