trouble with diaeresis

Hello,
First of all, let me say that I am so grateful to the creator(s) of Calibre for this means of converting e-books to different formats.
I convert ebook files to txt so that I can read the books in RapidReader. The font I prefer in RapidReader is Times New Roman on a Gateway NV55C laptop running Windows 7, Kindle DRM Removal, Calibre 2.12 and RapidReader 6
I have noticed that the diaeresis, as in "naïve" doesn't get converted properly.
I've tried using the following options in Look And Feel, by themselves in turn, to no avail:
  • Smarten punctuation
  • UnSmarten punctuation
  • Transliterate Unicode characters to ASCII
  • Keep ligatures

At one point I thought I had solved the problem by using "Transliterate Unicode characters to ASCII" but it seems that doesn't appear to have worked after all.

Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure all those options are unchecked. In the TXT output portion of the conversion settings, make sure "Output encoding" is set to utf-8 (or at the very least NOT ascii).

If RapidReader is capable of reading utf-8 encoded text files, everything should work. If it requires ascii, then you can't have a diaeresis.

Thanks, DiapDealer.
That resulted in "naÏve" (Latin Capital I with Diaeresis) when the converted txt file was opened using Notepad, Notepad++ as well as MS Office Word 2007.
I have done a "find and replace" using Notepad++ to replace all of the Latin Capital I with Diaeresis with Latin Small I with Diaeresis in the converted txt file. Problem solved. Thanks for your help.

Not sure why they came through in all caps. My tests all kept their original cases. All's well that ends well though, I guess!
