It really is a shame that my e-reader doesn't have an SD slot

So, out of curiosity I typed the number of pages that I've read since I first purchased a Kindle into Wolfram Alpha. I'm not the fastest reader, nor do I have a huge amount of time to read, but I'm averaging near 20 pages per day over the last ~4 yrs.

Input Interpretation:
28,481 generic pages (in English)

Conversion:
8.687×10^7 characters (86.87 MB (megabytes))
(assuming 5.1 characters per word and 1 space between each word)
14.24 million words
1.3 million lines

~100 MB in four years... so I'll finish the 2 GB that my PW1 has in ~76 years at my current rate. I just hope I live that long, but I doubt it.

If your screen size and resolution is good enough for manga, suddenly it is an entirely different equation.

Sure, I know, but I've always found it funny how so many people want to keep 4000+ books on their eReader. Even reading 10 per day that's 10 years, which seems absurd to me.

If that's what others want, enjoy, but I was just poking a little bit of fun at the idea.

Oh, certainly. The one instance where I entirely agree any decent ereader must have an SD slot is when the intended use is for comic books/manga/things with lots of pictures.

I have seen people who want to archive wikipedia.org, though... go ahead, tell me that is reasonable...
Yes, I kid thee not.

Usually they say this in the Which One Should I Buy forum, trying to turn people away from Kindles.

I have no issues with other ereaders, of course... I simply deplore people spreading FUD about them and pushing Kobos for all the wrong reasons.

I wish I had that much time to read. In Jr High I used to read 2 books per day, but that was ages ago. :-)

Then again, posting on MR isn't really increasing my book count much. :-)

Me neither.

I can, doesn't mean I always do.

I have some spare time on Shabbos though, when I make up for lost time during the weekdays. Also, students have more leisure time than people in the workforce.

It's not the words that take up the space, it's the images and embedded fonts. I have about 700 ebooks and have already well exceeded the original 2GB storage. (I don't need an external SD slot yet though, as I have expended the internal storage to 8GB).

Also useful when travelling, particularly for extended periods, if there's a chance your reader might chuck a wobbly and need to be reset and reloaded.

Or worse, you might have to buy a new one because you dropped it and the screen broke!

Well, I don't have 4000+ ebooks, but I am one of those that wants to keep all her books on her reader. Simply because I never know what I want to read next (I might not even have finished my current book ...)

My average epub (all contain an embedded font, simply because I usually can't stand the ones that are generally included with the various ereaders) is between 500Kb and 1Mb. The mobi versions are slightly smaller (about 250Kb). Now, let's play dumb and say that 1Mb = 1000Kb. That means I could not even store 4000+ books on 2Gb! But only about 2500....

Not sure I could live with that

Surely the important point is that anyone who wants a reading device with a card slot can buy one. If you don't need one, then it doesn't matter.

Yep. All but one of my readers had/have an SD slot (only my Kindle DXG didn't), but I used it only on my original Cybook Gen3, which had only 64MB internal flash (I stuck my dictionary there, and put my books on the card).

Well, I'll happily admit that I don't need one, but I'm happy I have it. I have my entire library on a 4 GB microSD card. I can decide on the spur of the moment if I want to read a new book or if I'd like to re-read an old favorite.

To each his own.

But then you have to ask why some people have libraries in their study? It's not because they want to read everything there, but because if they do need any one book, it's there for them to pick up and read.

The same can apply to an ereader. I doubt people expect to read say 4k in books, but it's nice to have your whole library with you because who knows what book you'll want to read or will need to reference.

Let's also not forget other media which can be stored like audio books and such, which take up a lot more space.

As for Kindles being mentioned before... I don't like them for reasons other than SD card support, like the sub-par range of supported file types.
