Smile Hi from Surrey, England

Hi all,

Having just brought a Sony PRS-505 back from a business trip to Orlando, I'm very pleased to discover this site.... Many years ago I tried reading ebooks on my Palm Pilot, however it never quite worked out.

Now that the technology has moved on, I've finished reading my first ebook - an Agatha Christie Poirot story - now's the time to get into ebooks.

Big question I guess is whether I need to purchase some gift vouchers from the Sony store so that I can buy stuff online for newer titles, or whether the classics will keep me happy for a while?

Surely they could launch in UK soon? (I know there are amny threads here on that topic...)

Happy reading & formating

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan and welcome to the Forum. Enjoy your 505. I got one back in January and really like it. Here are some links related to the Sony and the UK

There are lots of your countrymen on the Forum. Countrywomen too. In fact about our most prolific book up-loader is Patricia of South Wales. And I lived in Beds back in the mid-70's. Mind you, not too many eBooks around then.

Hello Jonathan.

So, you walked into a Borders bookstore in Orlando and walked out with a Sony Reader. It was in Orlando where I first held a Sony Reader in my hands. I had received my Kindle just 2 weeks earlier, so I wasn't in a position to purchase the Sony. But I did realize that I could be happy with the Sony device. Living in the USA, the Whispernet communication of the Kindle is a nice bonus, though.

Since I got my Kindle in mid-February, I've read 22 books on it (as well as 23 paper books and one audio book). Of these:
  • 6 were free downloads from Baen -- contemporary Science Fiction
  • 3 were purchased at Baen/Webscriptions -- contemporary Science Fiction
  • 2 were free downloads from Feedbooks -- classic Science Fiction
  • 7 were purchased at Amazon.com -- 4 new release SF, 1 new release mystery, 1 independent author, 1 cozy mystery
  • 2 were downloaded from here at Mobileread -- classic fiction for young girls
  • 1 was purchased at Fictionwise -- contemporary Science Fiction
  • 1 I made myself from a file at Project Gutenberg -- classic children's book, also uploaded here to Mobileread to share.

Point here is that there are lots of sources for eBooks and that the free books aren't just classics. If you are a fan of Science Fiction, you'll find quite a bit of free reading at Baen and several authors such as Cory Doctorow have released their books with a Creative Commons license.

Enjoy your Sony Reader and enjoy your stay here at Mobileread. We're glad you've decided to join us here.

That depends on if you want to do the LIT to LRF shuffel. It isn't to difficult and fictionwise does have most of the books that Sony does, if not more. Plus you'll be developing a non-device specific library if you go this way.

That said, if you don't want to get vouchers I can help with that. Just send me a PM.

And thanks to all the replys to my introduction - this is a very friendly forum site.

Elsi, thanks for the recommendations - I have already found a Cory Doctorov collection and enjoyed a couple of his short stories.

And found a contact here who sold me a $25 Sony card so have purchased a couple books there as well.
(Daniel Dennet's latest and Palestinian Walks by Raja Shehadeh)

Thanks

Saw it in Borders at the airport, they were out of stock - then checked all the other stores and found one at in-motion - the sales guy had one of his own, and was very enthusiastic - so out came the credit card - now 3 books later and a growing collection - I'm hooked.
