Do you know of any Kindle giveaways?
My old Kindle has died and money is tight so I'm trying to win one. Do you know of any contests where entering doesn't require me giving them access to my Twitter account or handing over my firstborn?

I don't know of any Kindle Contests, but Kobo is having a contest for the Kobo Glo HD and B&N has a trade in deal on the Galaxy Nook. I think a Kindle is worth $25.

Refurbished Kindles from Amazon are ok. When I broke my 1st K3 by accident I was able to get one for about half of what the original cost at the time I bought it. The 1st replacement had some os problems that I couldn't work out and Amazon sent me a replacement for the replacement at no extra charge as the replacement was under warranty.

Definitely get a refurb Kindle from Amazon. They give you a full one-year warranty, unlike the majority of the other sites selling refurbs.

If you don't mind taking a bit of a risk, you can often get a good deal at the Goodwill auction site. The sellers are Goodwill locations from across the country. The prices are usually pretty good, but the items are sold "as is" with no guaranty that they will work so there are some caveats.
First, read the description and look at the photos carefully. The sellers will usually try to turn the device on, but they will not do any in-depth testing. If it doesn't turn on they will usually make a point of saying it's for sale "As Is" or "For parts only." If it turns on -- and the pictures look good -- you're probably okay. If they say they have done "No testing," I would assume it has problems. It's also a good idea to read exactly what's included -- most items are sold without USB cables, AC chargers, etc. Second, check the shipping and handling charges. They can add up if you're on the other side of the country. The usually have plenty of Kindles (of various model numbers) but those are also the most popular, so the prices are relatively high. Nooks are also pretty common and (usually) more reasonable. Other brands, like Kobo, etc., show up and often only attract a single bid. For instance, I recently got a Hanvon reader in great shape for $8.99, including shipping and handling. I have never had a problem with an ereader from Goodwill, but it's possible, so you are taking a bit of a risk. I've bought two Iriver H320 hard drive MP3 players, and both had problems -- so it's something to consider. (I was able to fix both players, so I'm still happy.) You can also setup a new Twitter account just for contests. That way can enter and they don't get to muck with your real account.

I think Mobileread usually has a contest around New Year's, and the rewards are ereaders. Probably a Kindle option.

I learned a lot here. Your suggestions are appreciated. But good news! A very kind and generous soul from this very forum offered to give me her Kindle Fire because she has recently upgraded. Say what? I know, it was totally unexpected and pretty terrific. Doing the happy dance. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'll soon be asking for help on how to change it over to my Kindle account.
