chapters opening as pop-up footnotes
I've noticed something with the last two updates of Calibre - when I click on a table of contents entry in some books, it loads the chapter in the pop-up footnote window. But it only happens with some books. But with Sigil or Readium, clicking on the toc entry jumps to the chapter as it should.
Here is a link to one ebook that has this problem. Moderator Notice

@Fedwin - I suspect the problem lies with the content of the ToC in the Epub - in that the links in the are improperly formulated. I suggest you look at a 'good' and a 'bad' epub in the editor to see the difference.
You may be able to 'fix' the non working TOC's with the Edit TOC tool, if not then you should be able to fix it in the editor. In both cases make sure you have copies of the files as they are now... You could to complain to store where you bought the book - they might even give you your money back ![]() BR |

@moderator - Sorry, I didn't even think about that. I just figured calibre guys would want an example.
@BetterRead - Thanks. I am not concerned about the book, since it works fine on my ereader and with other programs. I thought it must be a bug with the latest two calibre updates and was just trying make them aware of it. The html was this: <p class="calibre26"><span class="calibre18"><a class="calibre12" href="../Text/chapter1_1.xhtml" id="ch1"><span class="calibre25">CHAPTER ONE -THE EARTH</span></a></span></p> I reduced it to essentials: <p><a href="../Text/chapter1_1.xhtml" id="ch1">CHAPTER ONE -THE EARTH</a></p> and the same behavior continued. I removed the id="ch1", which seems valid to me, and now it works fine. But I am no html wiz. If no one else experiences this problem, I guess it is the book and it is just beyond me to see why. |

It is simple, any link that is pointing to another html file when that file also links back to the original link is assumed to be a endnote/backlink pair.
This assumption can, of course be incorrect in some cases, as you discovered, but most of the time, it makes sense. You can always force the viewer to not treat a link as a footnote/endnote, by setting epub:type="link" on the <a> tag. |

And thinking about it, I can probably improve the heuristic to exclude the case when the link is the only content in a block level p, div, heading, etc tag.

Thanks, that explains it.
I like to be able to click back and forth between chapter titles and the html table of contents. How important that is to the average Calibre user, I don't know. |
