Collection name is the same. How do I keep it.
I have just taken delivery of my Voyage. I have started to add books and collections over. But. When I try and name collections, it says 'that name already exists. Please enter a different name.' How do I get round this, I don't want to have to completely rename all my collections on my Voyage.
I basically want to keep the collection names as they are on my PW1. or is this not possible because of blasted cloud collections? |

Surely that's the whole point of Cloud Collections: that you can have the same collections on multiple devices? Apologies if I'm missing something.

You don't need to do anything except mark your collections to see in all views and/or select a collection view. Your collections will be available using those recommendations, and your books will auto-populate once you download them from the cloud.

Not all mine are clouded. Trying to do it via cloud it's still not showing collections. If I try the collection that's on my PW1, I get the you can't do that. it's really annoying as hell. To be tied to a cloud collection, and unable to alter the name.
Just looking at my Voyage now, and the books are showing next to the collections. Which never happened in the PW. So, am I lumbered with using the cloud as my collection name. Surely, there must be a way to 'delete' cloud name. So I can have them as I did on my PW Which, had exactly the same collection names. So why won't the Voyage let me? |

All collections on a PW1, PW2, or Voyage are Cloud Collections; these devices do not support "non-Cloud" collections.
All your collections will show up in "Collections" view. You select which ones you want to appear in the other views (author, title, recent) by "Starring" the collection (select "Collections" view, then press and hold the collection name, then tap "Show in all views"). This selection is device-specific. If you rename a collection, it will rename it on all your devices. Hope this is some help. |

Do you want to put different books into the Collections that you have on your Paperwhite? I'm not sure that can be done...
If not, the trick is going to be to hold your finger down on top of the cloud Collection and then click on the option that says something like "Show this Collection in all Views," I think. That'll mark the Collections with a star... then you need to use the dropdown menus to sort the Collections/Books the way you want them to appear. (I'm using "Show all" on the left dropdown, and "Collections" on the right hand one.) pghaworth explained it really well in another thread. I think it was the "Voyage, First Impressions" thread... until then, I was totally confused! I'm moving over from a Kindle Keyboard. Everything has changed... it's not intuitive, at all, to me, anymore! |

This Amazon help page has a good explanation of how to use Cloud Collections:

You can't have different books in the collection on different devices, but you can of course have different books in the collection downloaded on different devices.

Or rename your collections as PW2_CURRENT and KV_CURRENT ..... so that they are NOT the same collection.

I had similar issues going from my KK to the PW1. By the time the Voyage and my subsequent PW2s rolled around I had forgotten everything from the KK -> PW1 transition. I'm better with it now and I'm really glad I was able to help. It is confusing going from the KK to the Voyage or PW models. |

The use of Cloud Collections is very well explained in the Voyage User Guide.

Really? I read it, and didn't get enough info from it. I finally figured out what MickeyMark figured out, but it took trial and error. Just now, I went back to the "First Impressions" thread, found all the helpful posts MickeyMark mentioned, and quoted them into one post. (It's the last post in that thread, but only at the moment....)
Could we possibly get all those put into one sticky thread, something like "Cloud Collections 101" ? It wasn't at all obvious to me either. I imagine there may be a bunch of people now jumping into the Cloud Collections world, now that there are finally BUTTONS again. [errr, unless there already IS a sticky like that, and I didn't see that either.... ] |

I have to agree with HarryT, the instructions in the guide do seem to be helpful, much more so than in previous guides or the website. However, maybe that seems that way because I have years of experience wandering through Amazon's mess of a feature. It gives you the basics but it is not really that helpful for figuring out the advanced mechanics of maintaining collections throughout multiple devices. For example, how long does it take for their server to be updated when changes are made to collections before other devices get the updated information? And before you say, it is instantaneous, it actually is not on e-ink devices. Personally for me, if I make a change on the Fire, android or iOS the changes seem to get to any of those three along with the pw2 pretty quickly. However, if I make changes on the pw2 there could be time delays of when they are seen on either of the mobile devices. And if you make simultaneous changes to different collections on the pw2 as well as one of the other types, most times the other devices changes will export to all devices but the pw2s changes will not. It is my experience that the pw2 does not sync as often as the tablet-type devices. On the one hand this is good because the CCs already cause enough of a battery drain on the pw2 but on the other hand it is not because changes could be lost. Also, it seems the e-ink device always takes precedence in the order of which devices sync when. I am not sure what the order is after the e-ink but my pw2 always goes first. LOL, as I said the documentation is well explained but it doesn't really go into anything beyond the basic used of CCs.

Does an explicit "sync & check for downloads" cause the pw2 to sync then and there? I would certainly expect it to, from the action's name.
And PS when I've done a long-press on a book title, and I'm adding it to collections -- if I make several collection changes (un-check CURRENT, and also check ImDONE and maybe IN2014 and SERIES, for instance) is a 15-20 second wait time NORMAL? I'll have to actually time it later, but it's long enough that I keep trying to touch "done" several times to make sure it actually *heard* me (registered my touch) and thus I wind up pressing whatever what UNDER that on the underlying screen. Is this amount of wait normal?? [This is for a new Voyage, but it HAS had a week to index things.] PPS I did create a "Cloud collections 101" thread, FWIW. |

I also get a delay when I press done with the PW2, it's not the indexing on the device that causes the delay its the 'checking' in with the cloud that takes the time as its trying to ensure that any changes you make to your collections are immediately reflected in the cloud. The idea is that you can make a change on your Kindle then sync on a device with a Kindle app (for example) and the charges you just make on the kindle are reflected on the app within minutes. I guess the delay could be the wifi connection or how busy the Cloud Server is. It's anoying that its not instantaneous I know that much. Last edited by Josieb1; 11-05-2014 at 08:38 PM. |
