Free (Kindle/iTunes) Murder in Thrall [London Police Procedural Mystery w/Romance]
Murder in Thrall by Anne Cleeland (SYKM) is the 1st in her New Scotland Yard series of police procedural murder mysteries with strong romantic elements, set in London starring an Irish newbie detective and an aristocratic Chief Inspector, this installment pitting them against the obligatory probably-a-serial killer and bureaucratic snu-snu, a phrase I gleefully borrow from Charles Stross' Laundry series by way of a detour into Futurama, free courtesy of publisher Kensington.
Apparently the 3rd installment in the series is now available as a pre-order (slated for March 2015, though). Currently free @ Amazon UK (probably slated to drop in the main store after midnight Pacific Time) & iTunes (available to Canadians). Likely to show up in the usual other stores later, since Kensington has generally been fairly generous about spreading the freebies around, but things seem like they're being rather slow to propagate this week. And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Mostly by default, but sometimes it's nice to see an author pay at least a modicum of attention to the entire fraternizing between ranks with a significant power differential being disapproved of thing instead of going straight into the standard-seeming no-holds-barred office romance with absolutely no real-life-workplace-regulations-equivalent obstacles mode. Enjoy! Description Can London's most elusive killer elude the keen minds of Scotland Yard's most unlikely pair of detectives? An Irish redhead of humble beginnings and modest means, Kathleen Doyle is the antithesis of Chief Inspector Michael Sinclair, Lord Acton, the brilliant but enigmatic lord with a knack for solving London's most high profile homicides. When a horse trainer is found dead at a racetrack, the duo's investigation does little to deter the killer at large. Jeopardizing the case are their colleagues at CID headquarters, whose nosing into the nature of Doyle and Acton's after hours relationship threatens to lay bare the most classified information of all. As the murders pile up, Doyle and Acton uncover something far more sinisiter than they could have imagined. Now that they know too much, their partnership could be very brief indeed. . . |
