Turgenev's stories of Russian country life in the mid-nineteenth century. He described them as 'his most important contribution to Russian literature'. Tolstoy, amongst others, agreed wholeheartedly, saying that his evocations of nature in these stories were unsurpassed. (Wikipedia)
