K3 vs PW2012 vs PW2014 screens
The images are all resized to 600x450.
I took some pics of the 3 Kindles side-by-side under incandescent light and in the dark. Here are the results. The order in all images has the PW2012 to the left of the PW2014. The K3 is self evident. I think my PW2014 looks dingy until it gets above light level 8 at which point it seems more white than the PW2012. I didn't realize how much the K3 case light shows on the PW2012. These are all hand held and I tried to hold as still as I could... which was not very still. Apologies. The 2014 version of the PW does look the best. And just as I thought when comparing my PW2 to my Kindle 3, the PW does look better even with the light down low. I do get what people mean about the text not being as crisp, but that apart....
Also when in a dark room with the PW light set reasonably low, it looks better to read on than the K3 with the light attached. Yes with the light set high it makes it looked washed out, but used as its meant to with the light at a lower level, I simply don't see how people think a book light with the K3 looks better? |

To be correct, please note that it's not a BACKLIGHT: eInk screens are opaque, and cannot be backlit. The PW2 (and Voyage) have a FRONTLIGHT.

Yes Harry, sorry for the misnomer. You are correct of course about the lighting terminology.
Looks like I need to edit the post and repost the pics back in a way that accommodates the site policies. Apologies all. There is no question that the built-in light of the PW series trumps the case light of the old K3. But I find either PW very readable and surprisingly, found the PW2014 to be a tad on the brownish side at lower light levels than the PW2012. But that appears to change once the light levels exceed level 8. Other than the speed of operation, I don't see that great a difference in the PW2012 and the PW2014. Both are equally readable imo. And the speed difference is not that great either, in my limited testing. |
