Free (nook/Kindle/Kobo) Derrick Rose: Injury & Recovery [Basketball Celeb Journalism]

Derrick Rose: The Injury, Recovery, and Return of a Chicago Bulls Superstar by the Chicago Tribune Staff is a collection of the newspaper's journalistic coverage & interviews regarding the celebrity basketball player's and his team's difficulties during their recent sports season, free courtesy of publisher Agate's Digital imprint.

Currently free @ B&N & Kobo (not available to Canadians) and slated to drop at Amazon after midnight Pacific Time (actually, probably on Monday which is when Agate's weekly scheduled freebies tend to show up there). Will probably show up in DRM-free PDF available worldwide directly @ the publisher's webstore in a couple of days' time as their scheduled freebies often do (but not always, they seem to have skipped last week after having been fairly consistent for the month before).

ETA: Now also free @ B&N UK & Amazon UK. Newly free @ iTunes (not available to Canadians), and may also be free @ Google Play for the US. Might also show up later @ the publisher's webstore (DRM-free ePub available worldwide), as some Agate freebies did since they started to return last week.

Description
Derrick Rose is a collection of articles, interviews, and features that originally appeared in the Chicago Tribune, as written by the award-winning journalists who followed the Chicago Bulls superstar's yearlong saga of injury and recovery. From his devastating knee injury in the 2012 playoffs to his rumored return against the mercurial Brooklyn Nets and rival Miami Heat in the 2013 playoffs, Rose's injury captivated Chicago and drew national headlines. This is the only book that covers all the key moments of Derrick Rose's return from beginning to end.

Ever since he was selected first overall in the 2008 NBA draft by his hometown team, Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose has been one of the most important athletes in a city that takes its sports stars seriously. The former two-time Illinois high school basketball champ and NBA Rookie of the Year also became the youngest player in league history to win an MVP award, as well as the only other Bull than Michael Jordan to do so. Chicago's vibrant and discursive sports culture, which can be just as much a force for city unity as it is a cause for civic meltdown, has perhaps never been more fully on display than during Derrick Rose's lost season. Following his gut-wrenching knee injury in the 2012 playoffs, Rose began the Bulls' 2012–2013 campaign recovering and rehabilitating, and neither team nor player definitively declared a date for his return.

As rumors inevitably swirled of Rose's estimated return to a scrappy, overachieving Bulls team, local fans and sports pundits became increasingly vocal regarding their homegrown star. Debate raged over talk radio and the blogosphere, and some even speculated between the Bulls organization and Rose's management camp, as occasional PR snafus would crop up. Misinformation would spread like wildfire, snappy soundbites became amplified like city air raid sirens, and grainy video clips of Rose practicing would be pored over with investigative scrutiny. Everyone from Rose's brother Reggie to hip-hop star Waka Flocka Flame weighed in on the three-time All-Star's status. In a city where hundreds of thousands turn out for championship rallies, it felt like millions were debating not only if Rose should return in 2013, but even his previously unquestioned competitive spirit.

Ultimately, Rose wouldn't play a single second of an NBA game in 2012–2013, be it the playoffs or the regular season. But the story had grown into something beyond the scope of professional basketball and into a topic of ubiquitous public discourse and an issue revealing how a city relates to its most popular figures. This is the only book that captures that conversation between star, media, and fans, and takes readers on the 2012–2013 season's roller-coaster ride of speculation and hope. For Chicago Bulls fans, basketball enthusiasts, and anyone interested in Americans' passion for celebrity, Derrick Rose is a must-read chronological account of Chicago's most promising and successful sports star since Michael Jordan.
