Kobo Glo disk I/O error - cannot update metadata

I had Calibre installed and configured on an old laptop and it worked beautifully, including updating the shelves and book covers on my Kobo Glo. Since installing it on my new laptop, however, I am getting issues with the metadata.

Uploading or Deleting books on the device works fine (if slower than I remember), but I get an error on "Send metadata to device".

disk I/O error

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 87, in run
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 532, in _sync_booklists
File "site-packages\calibre\devices\kobo\driver.py", line 923, in sync_booklists
File "site-packages\calibre\devices\kobo\driver.py", line 2242, in update_device_database_collections
File "site-packages\calibre\devices\kobo\driver.py", line 757, in set_readstatus
OperationalError: disk I/O error

The issue seems to be the bookshelves. If I clear the bookshelf field, I can upload and delete with no issues. I tried creating a new bookshelf and using that, but it returns the same I/O error. For some reason I can't send the bookshelves.

Sorry, I meant to look at this last night when I had access to the driver code to check. Your post in the Kobo forum reminded me.

I will check tonight, but, could you run calibre in debug mode, connect the device and post the log? The log shows a lot of information that can help me with this. Debug mode can be started from calibre by right-clicking on the preferences button and selecting "Restart in debug mode". Calibre will restarted, then connect the device, wait for the device jobs to finish, or the error to display, and close calibre. The log will be displayed. Post the full contents of the log.

Also, after this error, can Windows still see the device? Can it access the drive?

Actually, I switched from the laptop to my old PC and it worked fine. Something seems to be up with the USB ports on the laptop.

It could be a USB port issue. Changing port or cable has been known to fix this. There were also a series of similar reports in the past involving Windows XP running on a PC with an AMD CPU. But, these were all older machines. I assumee your laptop isn't.

My usb 3 PCIe adapter barfs on some of my old usb cables/connectors. No problems with usb 3 grade cables. USB 3.0 doesn't like cables longer than 3M.

The USB2 spec was never for long (unbuffered) cables. 16feet (shorter than 3M).
I was on a project where we ended up changing 10foot USB2 cables to 6foot cables. I suspect the issue was really the USB3 ports on the (major brand) PC. (the devices were USB2 photo printers)
