Desktop connection problem with my Kobo glo

Hi everybody

I already apologize for my future errors, because I'm french. I've got my Glo since 1 and a half year, and everything was OK. I use generally Calibre to add new book on my Glo.

2 weeks ago I've bought an ebook on the kobostore. To upload this book on my glo, I had to reactivate my account on kobo. The computer tells me that I couldn't go anymore without updating my kobo. I've made the update and the glo freeze and the update freeze. Since each time I try to connect my glo via the usb system, the glo isn't anymore recognize.
I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the kobo desktop.
I've even made a factory reset of my glo. The funny thing is just after the reset when connecting on the usb port before installing the kobo, I have been able to add book through Calibre, but then after trying to install kobo in order to be able to read on the glo. The system ask me to connect the reader and have never been able to detect it since.
Finally I've been able to install kobo through the wifi and what's funny the ebooks I did put through Calibre are on my glo...........

I've tried several time on several days, tried again to uninstall and reinstall the kobo desktop nothing to do. Each time I connect my glo through the usb port, it said connected and in charge, but the computer don't see anything on the glo, and ask me to format the new disk........

Could anyone help me to solve the problem because it will be quite long to add new book on the glo if I have each time to go through a factory reset and wifi installation.

I have Vista on my computer.

The technical datas on my glo :
Logiciel 3.8.0 (O48bbobo71, 22/08/2014)
Serial number : [Deleted - MODERATOR]

And I live in France.

Thanks in advance

When you've bought a new Kobo book, you can add it to your glo just by syncing it with Kobo via wifi. There's no need for Kobo Desktop connection at all. Firmware updates are all over-the-air now too, again no Kobo Desktop required.

Alternatively you could download the Kobo book on your computer from a browser window: after you buy the book, it will usually* have a "Adobe DRM EPUB" download button. Download the book using Adobe Digital Editions. Then you have two choices:
- use Adobe Digital Editions to load the book onto your Kobo via USB cable (Kobo Desktop is not involved at all);
- or use Apprentice Alf plugins (google it, we can't give you detail here) while importing your book into Calibre. The DRM will be stripped, and you can load the book into Calibre as usual.

* The asterisk is needed, as some Kobo books have no downloadable EPUB, unfortunately. In this case, you have two choices:
- wifi sync your Kobo, and the book will automatically download to your Kobo;
- or use Kobo Desktop to download the books, then use the [deleted] plugin for Calibre (again, no details, search here and google for more) to strip the DRM and make the book suitable to sideload across.

Thanks Meera, but it's not a problem of DRM. the problem is that I can't use kobo desktop anymore to download the books I have in my calibre library who don't have DRM.

If you have non-DRM books in your Calibre library, you can just put them on your Glo directly with Calibre. There's no need for Kobo Desktop in that process at all.

I know but even Calibre doesn't detect that my reader is connected.

Did you try a different cable and connect to a different port directly on the computer? Some ports, like those at the front of a PC or through a hub, don't have the power required and won't work on many devices, ereaders included.

What windows version are you using? When you connect device to computer running windows it asks what program do you want use with this device? You can have more than one program used with your Kobo, Kobo desktop, Calibre.... or it might just consider it a badly formated storage device. I don't use windows but someone can tell you how to do this.

I'm on Windows Vista

When I connect it don't do anything.

I've tried an anotherr USB Port, same thing.
I've bought a new cable, same thing.

I've tried again to do the process, with the reinitialising. At the begining my computer does'nt understand it's connected with a device, but as soon as I've selected the language on my glo, the files on the glo are readable and kobo named. I can then put all the books I want, but I can't make the upgrade then with the desktop. I have to do it with the wifi. When it's finished, I can read the books on the glo, but when I've tried to connect again, the computer doesn't understand anymore and ask to format the drive.....

This is a problem with the Windows PC not being able to see the partition on the device properly. Can you try another PC? And if you can try a Mac or Linux machine to see if they can see it, that's even better.

But, I suspect the internal memory is failing. As it is a Glo, you can open it and replace the internal micro SD card. The current card is either a 2GB or 4GB card, but people have replaced them with 16GB cards. You will need an image to write to the card, but that can be supplied.

I've tried with my husband's laptop who is on windows 7, same thing.

What I find really strange is that when resetting I can connect and put book on my device, but as soon as I've made the connection with the wifi, I can't anymore.
Maybe next time I should choose english language ?

OK. That says it is probably the device, not the PC.

Were you able to reconnect to the PC before using the WiFi?

It's worthwhile trying, but, at the same time I sort of hope it doesn't help.

Yes as I said before : The funny thing is just after the reset when connecting on the usb port before installing the kobo, I have been able to add book through Calibre, so I can connect to the PC.

I'm still not sure if that is a yes or no. That sounds like you did a factory reset, connected and set the device up and copied a book at the same time. But, I'm not sure that you were able to connect a second or third time and copy more books to the device. You have definitely said that after using WiFi, it couldn't connect to the PC. But, I'm not sure if that is the trigger or simply using the device is enough.

Definitely after the factory reset, I can't connect to the PC in order to finalize the kobo installation with my glo. I have to do it through the Wifi, and once it's done, I can only connecto to charge to battery and no more to put books through calibre.

Thanks for trying to understand, it's already not easy to explain technics in french therefore in english.........
