First Q: Where does the debian folder in my archive go? it has all the start-x, stop-x, x-org server, etc. doe it go in /mnt/us?

Sorry, I missed that.

/mnt/us is the only place you have room to install anything.

I have never used dsmid's Debian -
We need to wait for either someone that has used it or dsmid to answer.

That's what I thought.
Can you or someone else at least explain this in a somewhat clearer fasion?

Having that link certainly helps.

That is very early in a long thread that includes a lot of updates and information.
Including external links to references.

Try reading the entire thread and combining all of the advice into what you are doing.
That might get you closer.

At least close enough to tell us (in the context of that original thread) where / what part you are having trouble with.

It goes into a loop mounted file that acts like the original distribution layout once you chroot into it.
(There is a script for doing that.)

Directions and discussion on size of the file and getting it formatted later in that same thread.

OK, I have all the downloads I need and I hope to get going tomorrow.

One last thing: Let's say I accidently errored in my build. Would debian just not work, or would the whole device get messed up?

Also, when you chroot debian, is it basically 100% independent of Kindle OS?

And finally, when you download debian from the official site, does it come with x-org?

dsmid has Debian running in a chroot.
Which means it doesn't have access to the Amazon files (only kernel system calls).

Depends -
It could, just depends on what you download for installation.
But it doesn't have to.

That is somebody else's work.
I would probably try to install openSUSE instead
