Slow to come on

I've had my Aura HD for a few weeks and was enjoying it. But, the last few days ... I'm getting ticked off with it. Here's the deal: when I turn the unit on (hitting the little switch on the top) it is taking 2 x to work. Then I get a white screen for a few seconds followed by the little cubes. After about another 30 seconds I get the home screen. It then takes another several seconds for that to become active so I can press on the book I'm reading. At that point I am returned to my current page (sometimes a few pages back) and I continue my read.

It was working just fine and I've not changed anything here.

So:

Could it be just the book? I've not tried loading in a different book to test.

Do I need to "reboot" the unit? Not sure how.

A paperclip reset? Don't really want to do that since it'd probably need to refresh the OS at that point and probably dump out my shelves as well.

BTW, no cover here. Just letting it time out to get into the sleep mode after 10 minutes.

Suggestions?

That sounds like it is powering up from off rather than sleep mode. Is that what you intend? Do you have the automatic sleep option set to turn the device off rather than go to sleep? Or maybe power off very shortly after it goes to sleep? Can you check those options are set to what you want?

As to the other questions:
- It could be the book. But, it is more likely the database.

- A paperclip reset is not usually harmful. It does a soft reset of the device and it should boot OK afterwards. It's usually only useful when the device hangs.

- For a "reboot", it sounds like that is what is happening. You can do a power off with the switch (hold about five seconds) and then power on. You might need to wait a few seconds after the screen displays before it will turn on.

Glad you are the resident genius! Yes, I'd set the power off option.

I had set the auto sleep to 5 minutes, but found that a bit too quick so thought I'd set it to 10. Nope, as you surmised I'd set power off instead.

Seems to be fine now.

Question: why in world would this option even be there?

It's nice to be proved right sometimes. Now, if I could only convince my wife of this...

Because some people think it is a good idea. If someone is reading several times a day, it doesn't make sense to let it power off. But, if they only read for an hour before bed each night, letting it power off in between makes sense. It might make also make sense ff the power off options were a lot longer. Powering off after sleeping for 24 or 48 hours would be good to prevent the battery completely running out. You can change the settings in the config file to other numbers, but I don't remember if anyone has found a maximum that can be used.

There are a surprising number of people who like to turn their device OFF rather than just sleep it. Personally with the battery life of e-ink I want the instant on of sleep.

EDIT: Darn it, beaten to the punch once again by Davidfor's fast fingers

Okay, some people are probably wrong? I understand that e-ink really only draws power when it's painting a page.

Oh, could it be that if you have wifi ON then it's a "good thing" to turn the device off since that should disable wifi as well? And in sleep wifi remains on? This is only a guess!

The only reason I see to go into sleep at all is that accidental touches could change the page, etc. I'm going to have to get a case one of these days with the magnetic on/off thing. Don't really know if I want the added weight and the need to flip open/closed ... I really only use the reader in my house.

Correct, but the other components such as CPU and memory are drawing power.

In sleep on the Kobo devices, the WiFi is off as well. But, the device can wake and do a sync if the auto sync is turned on and the the WiFi is enabled. It won't do this if the device is off.

Other than accidental touches, it does extend the battery life. I've checked by disabling sleep and leaving it over night. The battery did go down more than if it had slept over night.

As to a cover, I resisted one for about two years (one year each for the Touch and Glo). Then my wife got a Glo and insisted on a cover. I tried it on my Glo for a couple of days and was a convert. Just opening the cover to start reading is easy. Plus the protection if I put it in my pocket while changing trains.
