Page numbers do not work for entire book

Since updating to 3.15, my page numbering does not work correctly when set to entire book. When I choose entire book under reading settings, I will get the proper page number, but then it will not change as I read. If I hop to another chapter, also, the page number remains the same. When I change page numbering to current chapter in reading settings, the numbering works correctly. This happens both in books I bought from Kobo and others that I imported from Calibre. In some, the behavior is slightly different -- numbering will work for the entire book as long as I don't hop to another chapter which will not be recognized, for example. Nonetheless, the entire book numbering is consistently wrong.

Is this a known problem?

This can happen if there is a fault in the book's TOC.

The KEPUB reader especially expects the NCX toc to be in a very specific form, and all sorts of things will break if it is not, including the page numbering. The EPUB reader is not quite as strict, but it expects at least the order of entries in the NCX toc to match the order of the OPF spine.

Edit: if you want to post the OPF and NCX files from one of the books that has the problem then I'll see if I can point out the faults.

Thanks. Here's one from an epub.kepub.

That NCX should be fine for an epub as everything in the NCX toc appears in the same order it is in the OPF spine, but for a kepub it has two problems:

1. Some files in the OPF spine are missing from the NCX toc: e.g. titlepage.xhtml.

2. Some files appear more then once in the NCX toc: e.g. sher_9780465022342_oeb_c01_r1.html.

Edit: I think the first is the main problem, that is what will be affecting the page numbering. The second probably just affects the chapter graph, as long as all the references #h1, #h2, etc. are in the correct order within the html files themselves. But I might have that backwards.

Interesting. The original epub file does not have an opf file. I assume it was created by the epub to kepub converter. Could it be a bug in that?

Hmmm.... that is a very non-compliant epub then. The .opf file is a required item. If you attempted to open it with Sigil for example, it would not open the file with "No appropriate OPF file found" error.

I think you might be looking in the Calibre directories and seeing an .opf file there possibly? Of course any original epub won't have that opf file until you add it into Calibre, it's part of Calibre's required files.

As DNSB said, you need to open the epub file in Sigil, and there you'll find 2 extra files, opf and ncx, in the left-hand column towards the bottom.
