Odyssey Frontlight 2 questions

A few questions for the owners of this device:

I had some problems with my Odyssey hd a few years ago. It bricked, through fiddling with it I got it working again by restarting in maintenance mode and then turning on the Wifi in the 3 seconds I had each time before it froze. So basically my Odyssey is now constantly powered on - with wifi on - and every 3 days I have to recharge it. If I forget this, I have to restart and I lose all my bookmarks, the book I was reading, etc... It still works fine but I'm getting a bit fed up with the constant recharges + consequences if I forget it.

So. the Odyssey Frontlight 2:

1 - I assume it fits the Odyssey hd cover, can anyone confirm this?
2- Does this also brick as easily as the first one, any bad experiences?
3- Search function?
4- Is this just another lighting system, or are there also improvements on the rather crappy hardware/software?

Thanks,
Ripper

Reading specifications it has a slightly faster CPU, double RAM and double flash. And I suppose another firmware.
I don't have any Odyssey so I don't know how good/bad was the old Odyssey.

Sombody asked in bookeen blog
http://blog.bookeen.com/bookeen-pres...cean/#comments
and there is an answer
Question:
What are the differences to the new Front Light HD 2 and – my second question – there will be an update for the old Frontligtht?
Answer
To answer your questions, the differences between the original Odyssey FrontLight HD and the new Odyssey 2, short answer: Odyssey 2 has twice the memory (4go instead of 2go), twice the RAM, and will ship with the new interface. As for your second question, our devs are putting the finishing touches on the update for the Cybook Odyssey following the feedback from our beta-testers, and it will be available for download very soon

Seriously, you should have asked bookeen, gotten you cybook changed.

You're saying that if the battery gets empty you loose all your parameters ?
If so, have you tried formatting the internal memory ?

The odyssey in itself is good, but yeah, the hardware is trouble. Especially for the firsts ones. Got mine changed twice, the last one is perfectly fine.

No, when I turn on the device it freezes within 3 seconds. No buttons give any reaction when I press them separately. But I can do reboots from maintenance mode (hold powerbutton + left and right page flip button). I found out that as long as I kept flipping pages - or kept going in and out of the menus immediately after a restart it would not freeze until I stopped keeping it "busy". So after a restart, I dashed to activate the wifi and bingo, it works. Of course when the battery is empty, the wifi stops and I also have to do a reboot. That's why I have to keep the Odyssey on and charged continuously.

I already sent it back to Bookeen for replacement, they sent the same one back to me and it froze again within 3 days. When I contacted them they said there was nothing wrong with it - even though I sent it to them as good as bricked. After this, I asked for a refund but they refused this, they wanted me to send it back to them at my expense - again - so they could have another look. Which I refused to pay for. This is not the end of my dealings with them - or Cultura shop, where I bought it - but it would take way too long to explain it here.

Let's say that I wish I didn't love the folder view this much or I would not spend one more penny on this company. But sadly I do, so if the new Odyssey is better and fits the cover/casing I'd buy it.

The first odysseys where a disaster in term of hardware. I did a few returns as well. (But, being in Paris, it's less of a pain)

Is your power button a slider ?

Last ones, as far as I know, are stable.

Nope, no powerslider. I bought it the day it became available so it's definitely the "bad batch".

Anyway, thanks for the answers guys, I'm still thinking about buying a new one. Maybe I'll just keep Old Yeller a little longer...
