Free (Kindle/Kobo UK) I'll Bring You Buttercups [WWI Family Saga Novel w/Romance]
I'll Bring You Buttercups by the late Elizabeth Elgin, herself a former WWII Navy "wren", is the 1st in her quintet of sweeping historical British family saga novels with strong romantic elements following the upper-class Sutton family and their dependents through several generations, this one covering them in the years prior to and during World War I, free courtesy of publisher HarperCollins' un-collinated Harper imprint.
Several of the customer reviews compare this to Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs, if you happen to be a fan of those TV series. One of the UK reviews mentions that it had been free for them in the Kindle edition late last year, so this technically may be a repeat, but it's never been mentioned here on MR and I didn't already have a copy in my account, and I've already got another official publisher promo repeat today, so I'm going to treat this as a new freebie for the purposes of the daily thread-count, unless something really compelling comes up in the next few hours. Currently free @ Amazon UK, & Kobo (most likely only available to the UK). Will probably drop after a day or two @ B&N UK, if this follows the same pattern as other recent HarperCollins UK freebies. May also drop @ iTunes UK (unlikelier, but it does sometimes happen). May or may not cross the pond. This exists in the same edition in North America, but thus far we've had a pretty low success rate for the transmigration of HarperCollins UK freebies. If it happens you like this and wish to read more in the series and have a UK account, the next few novels appear to be discounted to just £0.99 across multiple stores. Description (the 1931 is a typo in the original blurb; the actual book starts from 1913 and continues until 1919) The unforgettably stirring wartime tale of passion, heartbreak and tragedy from the bestselling author of A Scent of Lavender and The Willow Pool. From love springs tragedy, from tragedy comes hope… It is 1931 and Rowangarth, Yorkshire is a rural arcadia for sewing-maid Alice Hawthorn and young gamekeeper Tom Dwerryhouse. For Julia Sutton, daughter of Alice's employer, it is also a time of unfolding love for the handsome doctor, Andrew MacMalcolm. But with the outbreak of war their lives will be changed for ever… As Tom and Andrew volunteer to fight for King and Empire so too do Alice and Julia as VAD nurses on the Western Front. All find trials that will test them – and their love – to the limit as passion and hope are tempered by heartbreak and sorrow. Last edited by ATDrake; 09-17-2014 at 03:30 AM. Reason: Tie-in discount pricing for sequels. |
