How can I fetch the news without opening/starting up Calibre each time

You can use the command-line interface for "ebook-convert" -- it will accept news recipes as input.
You will need to put it into a script and create a scheduled task to run it as needed, of course. And you can use acrobatics, like "calibredb add" for adding them to the library programmatically, or "calibre-smtp" to email it. |
