Creating cover image in edit-book mode

I wanted to add a cover image in the edit-book mode. So, I thought the easiest method were to click on "add image" and insert my cover. Well, that worked, and after having inserted it, I could right-click on the "images" icon and declare the image as cover image. I thought that was it.

In the calibre biblitheque, the cover showed correctly, and also, after transferring the book to the device (without converting, in order to preserve my stylesheet settings), the device bibliotheque. Only at opening the book, the cover image was completely missing.

Same behaviour after downloading the cover image in the "edit metadata" mode of the GUI and transferring the book to the device.

Is there no way to create a proper cover image in the edit-book mode?

You need to add a html cover page, add the picture in this file and declare the html file as cover page too.

But to be honest, the easy way is, to go over the plugin polish ebooks. Put your cover in the calibre metadata (edit metadata) and then run the plugin with update the cover in the ebook files

Since you have already added the image you need to add an html file.

Select "File", "New file (image/fonts/HTML/etc.)" and enter something like "text/Cover.html". Move your new file to the top of the file list.

Place your cursor between the <body> and </body> tags, click on "Insert image" and select your cover image.

Mark Cover.html as your cover image and you're done.

To be honest, I ended up by inserting a cover image in Sigil.

This is what I had tried, too, but, for some reason, it failed at the point where the image should be inserted into the file. I'll try it again this evening.

Probably best to insert the cover using Polish Book.

The editor does not have a tool to generate a cover page (like Sigil does) and simply adding an image to a page using the editor doesn't use an svg wrapper (which you want for cover pages).

Yesterday, I tried to change a cover image of a book I have in the Calibre bibliotheque, following drjenkins' advice. I succeeded so far, but after saving the replacing of the cover image and turning back to the bibliotheque view, the old image was still present. When I clicked on the book in order to open the book viewer, the new cover was shown. I achieved no changes by using the update metadata command, neither in the edit metadata mode nor by using the modify epub plugin. So, I opened the book in Sigil and saved it elsewhere; then I deleted the book in Calibre and fetched it again from the new saving place. Now there was a correct result.

Is this a bug in Calibre?

Changing the cover in an ebook file is not going to automatically update the cover in the calibre library. For that you need to click edit metadata and then click the set cover from the selected format button in the top right corner.

Kovids method (the brown book icon) Reads the current cover from the selected book format into the Library.

I lean towards the Polish Method

1) Set(up) the Library cover and Metadata (as normal)
2) Polish it into the book
If the book has a cover, it will be replaced.
If it had none, it will now.

What completely happens, depends on your polish selections,
The nice thing about Polish, is it makes no other conversions.

New feature in calibre 1.42 (27 Jun, 2014)

Edit Book: new tool to easily add a cover to the book. It automatically generates the HTML wrapper and takes care of marking the covers files as covers in the OPF.

I am using Calibre 2.3.

I have a Project Gutenberg book, initially .mobi format, but I converted it to .aw3 so that I could use the editor.

However, before I started using the editor, I used the Edit Metadata function, to update the metadata, and add a description to the book. At the same time I used the Download Cover function and chose a cover for the book. This cover displays when I select my book in the Calibre library.

However, when I open the book in the Calibre Viewer, the first thing I see is a completely different cover which is somehow embedded. It is an amateurish image with the title and Author's name printed on a picture of a book. Ideally, I should like to replace this with the cover I added using the Edit Metadata function.

When I open the book in the Calibre Editor, the only images I see are two copies of the one I added myself. The one I am hoping to replace is not mentioned.

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to how I might go about removing this cover that isn't there, and substituting the one I chose?

Are you sure the second copy is not the old cover? It is expected to end up with an extra image in the front, since MOBI does not identify covers. The library metadata cover is prepended and identified as a cover, the old first image is just a page.

I cannot imagine how the book can still have the old cover if the image file is not physically present in the .azw3 (unless maybe it is referencing an image on the hard drive???

).

I have been playing with the viewer, trying to get a copy if the other, embedded image. in the process, I found that if I right-click the image, I see a context menu, one of whose opions is Inspect. Selecting ths gives some html, which included the following:

<image width="600" height="800" xlink:href="images/calibre_cover.jpg"></image>

I imagine that somehow relates to the page I see in the viewer.

When you change the cover in calibre the cover is not changed in the actual file.

So when you view the file with the viewer, there will be no changes.

When you open the file to edit, however, calibre updates all metadata in the file before opening it in the editor, including the cover, before editing (unless you turn off this feature).
