CALIBRE/CALIBRE COMPANION/NEXUS10

I have about 2000 books in Calibre. I have transferred them to a folder CALIBRE in the INTERNAL STORAGE folder of my Nexus 10. My E-reader is MANTANO. I also installed CALIBRE COMPANION on the Nexus and wirelessly transferred my books from CALIBRE. If I want to read a book, I can open CALIBRE COMPANION and I can open MANTANO. Unless I miss something, I have a feeling that I can do without CALIBRE COMPANION. Right or wrong?

Sounds like you are confused about the purpose of Calibre Companion.

CC is meant for organizing and searching for ebooks using the full metadata capacity of calibre itself. It is meant as the catalog and bookshelves of your library, before passing the book to Mantano/other for the actual eboook rendering.

Mantano is a reader app with limited bookshelf+cataloguing capacity. But if you only need that, it should serve well enough.

CC is meant to serve as a layer between calibre and Mantano/other ereader apps, for organizational and general metadata purposes. It can serve wirelessly as a device in calibre, sync read info and do powerful sorting and grouping. It is not meant to be a mere ereader, as there are already apps which do a perfectly fine job of rendering ebooks.

eschwartz, thanks very much for making this clear to me. Yes, I just want to read my books and I think that MANTANO does a great job. I do not need all the bells and whistles, which CALIBRE COMPANION apparently can generate. Hence, my idea that CALIBRE COMPANION was just a copy of what MANTANO does for me.

Fair enough, the bells and whistles are indeed just that. Of course, many people find that those bells and whistles enhance their ereading experience and make it much easier to handle their library, if you use calibre with your android device, it is practically a must-have, due to its outstanding integration with calibre.

If you have only just bought CC and you decide you do not need it (because you are happy with something more basic), then you should be able to return it for a refund. Or keep it and see if you fall in love anyway.

You say you have 2000 books on your tablet. 2000 books can be hard to organize and browse though in a book reader.

It might help to think of Mantano as the app that allows you to read the books, and Calibre Companion as the app that helps you decide which book to read. Or keep track of what you have already read.

If you kept 20 books on your device, CC would be a waste. With 2000, it will make your reading life a whole lot better. And its only $3.

Precisely. The primary purpose of CC is library management. With a large library it's enormously better than any system of folders or tags, allowing you to browse or search your library in a virtually limitless number of different ways.

Thanks!

Thanks guys for your inputs. I already have CC and installed it on my Nexus. It sounds like I do not (yet) know the full potential of CC and jumped to the conclusion that transferring the books from Calibre to the Nexus storage was enough to read them with Mantano. In principle it does the job, but I'll dig a bit deeper into CC's possibilities and reading your comments I think I'll be in for a nice surprise! Thanks again!
