Calibre X64 2.1 will not install
I am currently runnng Calibre x64 2.0 without problems.
I have downloaded and attempted to install v2.1 without success. Initially, I received the following message: The specified account already exists After several attempts, including a reboot along the way, I googled the message, and it was suggested that I try the Microsoft Fixit Program InstallUninstall procedure. I did this and it seemed to be successful. It certainly claimed to have fixed a problem, but at the conclusion of the process, which included an uninstall of Calibre and run of the 2.1 install, Calibre was fired up and I still found myself running v2.0! Shades of Alice through the Looking Glass! Perhaps if I try to install v2.0, I shall find myself with v2.1. ![]() But seriously, could it be that there is a problem with the intall package? I just tried the install package, it worked for me. Most likely you either have two calibre instals on your computer (32bit and 64bit) or you set it up to run from source.

Hi Kovid. Excellent software. Truly excellent. Thank you for birthing, and maintaining it.
I had this problem before. I only run 64 bit Calibre. See this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...96#post2836696 Each time I download the latest version (2.1), though the download file is named 2.1, it is actually the 2.0 installer. I've downloaded the 2.1 installer from FossHub; from the default Download page; and from the Previous Releases page. Every time I download I get the 2.0 installer. I use Firefox. I deleted all history, cleared cache, and tried again. Still 2.0 installer. I installed the Download Statusbar add-on for Firefox; still 2.0 installer gets downloaded. Just for kicks I downloaded the 2.0 installer from the Previous Releases page and compared the MD5 hashes. They match for every installer I downloaded today. That is to say, every supposed 2.1 installer I downloaded this morning has a hash that matches the 2.0 installer. Now I'll try downloading on Chrome and see what happens. Edit: Unlike the OP I do NOT get the "The specified account already exists" message when I attempt an install. I get the Repair/Remove dialog. I am running Win 7 Home Premium 64bit on an Intel Core i7 machine. I duplicated the issue on my backup machine AMD64 running Win 7 Home Premium. I had not yet upgraded from 1.48 to 2.0 on that machine. When I downloaded and installed the"2.1" installer, the first message I get on opening is "New version 2.1 of calibre is available for download." @kovid: I already had 2.1 installed on main rig by the time I saw your message. I checked my backup machine. There is no asterisk at the bottom of the calibre main window. On the left it says "calibre 2.0 [64bit] created by Kovid Goyal". On the right it says "Update found: 2.1.0". No asterisk that I can see.
Update. I downloaded with Chrome from Fosshub. The download was much slower than normal. Slow enough that these two strange occurrences led me to run a Malwarebytes scan as a precaution. Malwarebytes came back clean. Now running 2.1 on my main rig. Will wait a bit to update the backup. Now I suspect that Firefox caches popular downloads to a server somewhere. |

@hidden.platypus
Update notice appeared (was on 2.0): I used the built in 'Get Update' which opened Firefox on the Calibre X64 page. I clicked download Closed Calibre while I waited When download completed, I double clicked the file (in the download area of Firefox, not the OS file manager) Calibre installed, I clicked OK (Launch was ticked) Calibre 2.1 on W7 HP x64 just like I always get ![]() try the official one (using a standard, unaltered, browser) Accelerators have some nasty habits that don't always appear |

@ducks: thanks for the advice.
Running 2.1 now. Had to download with Chrome. I don't have any download accelerators (unless you're referring to download status bar as an accelerator in which case I should point out the downloads weren't correct both before and after installing download status bar.) and my rig is relatively hardened. But if there's something that you know and are willing to share, I'm more than happy to check it out. |

Update:
I was WRONG! My original Chrome 2.1 download was for the 32 bit version of Calibre. I downloaded the 64 bit version with Chrome and I got the same error. The 64bit version I downloaded with Chrome is the same as all the others I've downloaded today, meaning they are installers for Calibre version 2.0 In between that Malwarebytes found Potentially Unwanted Programs: Crossrider. Dealing with that now. Will update presently. Again. For the record, I am NOT running Calibre 2.1 despite downloading with different browsers. |

Update: Still unable to install 2.1 64 bit.
I changed my DNS servers just to be sure, cleaned my computer's cache and temp folders. Every file I download is 2.0. Information, suggestions welcome at this point. |

@eschwartz, excellent advice.
However, I've now tried this on 3 machines in our house. All running win 7, 2 running 64 bit win 7. Didn't think about downloading on my android devices, but I'll try that and report back. |

@eschwartz: Tried that. No go. 2 android devices (phone and tablet) both downloaded the 2.0 installer masked as 2.1.
Good thinking though. Don't have any Macs in the house or I would try that too. |

Well, then, it would seem to be somewhere between or in the network and the download sites.
![]() Is it possible your ISP is caching it in order to "provide faster internet"? Perhaps try some other network, say at work or starbucks or something. (If it works, you can yell at your ISP.) |

@eschwartz: Possible, but unlikely. Not too sure my ISP cares about my internet speed.
Also, I changed my DNS server after this issue started hoping to eliminate that as a possible source of the problem. I'm not sure, but I believe changing my DNS would bypass whatever cache my ISP would have put in place. Feel free to correct me if that's a mistaken assumption. |

ISPs often do weird things.
![]() DNS has nothing to do with the issue. DNS merely connects the website names to the correct IP address. It is the internet equivalent of a (gigantic) phone book -- but anything in between you and the network can always proxy everything you do and lie about what IP address you are accessing. |
