Aura HD Hosed Aura HD

Well.......Yesterday I tried to push my Aura by using caliber to download my kindle eBooks and BN eBooks and convert them to standard eBooks.

That went well and I had a little under 400 books.

Then I tried to transfer them to my Aura HD and somewhere in the process my Aura's database became corrupt and it did a hard lockup!

well I did the master reset trick using the button method and it started the recover process and failed due to a dead battery!

The device is stuck on firmware 3.2.0 (I had it on firmware 3.5.0 before the crash) and it tries to download the 3.3.0 firmware from the Kobo servers and fails due to a dead battery and the battery WILL NOT TAKE A CHARGE. I have tried charging it for over 12 hours.

can you not re-do the reset while it is connected to a wall charger ?

I have tried it and even attached to the wall charger it will not take a charge. it sits on Charging...0 forever.....

so sad...

the firmware that controls the charging circuits must have gotten zapped...

I have to say that this reader has the best screen and the best light I have ever used BUT the buggiest software/firmware EVER!

right now it is on the black screen with the battery icon lighting bolt saying "Please charge your reader" while on the charger!

I did open a trouble ticket with Kobo but I'm not expecting that to help from what I have learned from reading here! Ah well...

Have you tried a different charger? It's possible that for some reason in it's current state it's not liking the charger. USB via computer would be one option for alternative charger.

I assume youve also tried using a different usb cable. [ I managed to bend the connector on one of my cables & while it continued to work with other devices, it then refused to charge my Kobo arc tablet, so it is just possible that your device is not willing to play nice with one particular cable]

. IF you've tried 2 chargers & 2 cables then your only hope would to be to somehow remove /swap out the battery. if you could get a charged battery into the device then maybe the firmware upgrade would complete & then maybe the charging function would resume.

I'm not sure if I would want to go to all that hassle though - I'd probably dump it on ebay as "not working/for parts" & get somethign new

Sometimes it takes long time to start when battery is too low. You can try a wall charger and give it some more time.

well I think I learned a good lesson. Kobo has great vision with their devices but the software is a nightmare! I have given up on the Aura HD.

I did find my old PRS-950 and I am now remembering on how much I liked it! will load the + software and use it as it is MUCH more stable!

well......I decided today after waiting 2 weeks for customer care to call I plugged my HD into a back computer USB port at 3pm and ran the Kobo desktop as I waited for the call back from customer care. well I missed the call and I came back to the computer and OMG it charged up and updated itself to 3.3.0.

IT's working!!!

now I am VERY scared in trying to load a lot of books to it again but WOW my HD is BACK!

I missed the screen!

so my device will not charge using a standalone charger BUT the computer did the trick...??!!??

May be your standard wall usb charger has different voltage / current as the Aura HD required.

I think I would stop using that charger for anything. The Kobo devices will charge from a wall charger. If they aren't, then there is something wrong with the charger or the cable connecting them.
