Backup entire library / Undo release notification

1.How can I backup both books and metadata (together) to a different folder? I know I can drag and copy the mess but I looked and it has been almost 2 years since I did it last. I'd like to copy newly added (or changed) books on close or something.

2. I'm so used to updating and now that I'm frozen on 1.48 I want to turn off update notifications. If can't stop it can I change the font and color to make it less noticeable?

PS to Krittika Goval: All of us on XP know support is going away. After all who supports CPM and other archaic applications either. I and many others use Calibre as it is the only library application that does it so well. I don't create or edit books nor do fancy stuff so I still use XP, Office 2003 and many other apps that work just fine. If I upgrade Windows many of the other apps will stop working. It is what it is and 1.48 should work fine for me for my remaining years.Thank you for your hard work and putting up with the complainers.

Just copy the ENTIRE (top) Library folder. Everything is ther about THAT library..

I also noticed the 2.0 (on XP) did not respect the removal of the 'Show Notification when New Version is available' tick.

Anticipating not being able to go past 2.0 on XP, I had removed the tic (and restarted).
Lo and behold, there was the notice when I started this morning .

(Kovid: If this is a also a QT5 bug, please ignore this mumble )

Is the 'Show Notification when New Version is available' tick available on 1.48? If not I'll get over it.

Anybody already mechanized some kind of script (Calibre or Windows) to copy new/changed books to backup? It's not so much I'm lazy, just forgetful.

Microsoft's Robocopy is great for scripting backups and runs fast too, but not sure if it's available for XP. If not then you could still use XCOPY, it just has a few less features.

You want something like this: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=244228

Unfortunately, it is for linux not Windows. But it provides the concept behind what needs doing, and a basic structure.

It shouldn't be hard to convert it from linux bash syntax to Windows batch file syntax, and rsync has been built for windows. (maybe install cygwin?)

Alternatively, there are several windows programs for syncing, such as FreeFileSync. It should even be possible to script them.

NOTE: Make sure to use the mirror sync mode.

@OldLincoln - I bookmarked this the other day - Automatic Backup with FreeFileSync (FFS)

It includes a section on how plug FFS into Windows Scheduler

There are quite a few calibre users who use FFS. For legacy reasons I don't, but I do use a very similar product. On average it takes about 10 minutes to back up my data when I do an end-of-day shutdown.

I use a couple of RoboCopy scripts in Windows 7 to copy from C:\Folder\Books to U:\Archive\Books. The first simply lists what needs to be backed up, (Books-List.bat), and the second does the actual backup, (Books-Run.bat). I use the list version simply to check that there is enough room on my backup device and if there is then I use Books-Run.

Books-List.bat
Code:
ROBOCOPY C:\Folders\Books U:\Archive\Books /s /e /l /xx /ndl /np /ns /log:C:\Folders\Backup\Logs\Books.log
C:\Folders\Backup\Logs\Books.log
Books-Run.bat

Code:
ROBOCOPY C:\Folders\Books U:\Archive\Books /s /e /xx /ndl /np /ns /log:C:\Folders\Backup\Logs\Books.log /tee
C:\Folders\Backup\Logs\Books.log
You could of course simply schedule the Book-Run version, (taking out the second line which outputs to screen), and inspect the log file at your convenience.

Well, if this isn't something.... I spent most of the afternoon trying to remember what I used from the old Windows days where I could see folders side by side and compare the versions, etc, with the changes in red. I finally remembered XPTools and from there SyncToy. I set it up and tried it against a test folder and it worked well, although took a long time. So I set it up to sync Calibre Library to Calibre Backup and it ground through over 3K files until it did an excellent backup. I saves the setup so I can run it anytime.

With that success I was puzzled why nobody has responded to my last post here. Now I find that some did but I failed to have it set to notify. And of course BetterRed has posted above and I do need a faster version of SyncToy so I'll take a look at FreeFileSync tomorrow.

I did look at RoboCopy and other command line apps I recalled from my pre-Windows days but I don't want to try and remember how to work them. Getting too old for that stuff I spose.

Thanks for your help and I have fixed the notify to instant so I look for all. Especially if somebody has a C++ sync that will tear through over 20k files in, oh say 1 minute.

Okay I couldn't wait and DL'd FreeFileSync. However, I do have SyncToy installed and before installing FreeFileSync I need to know if they will conflict.

They can coexist like Word and WordPerfect can coexist on your PC, but they can't interoperate, at least not easily.

FFS has advantages over Synchtoy - speed, it can stash away prior versions for ever, quite a few users here etc etc.

One way to speed up your backups is to get USB3.0 external drive, and a USB 3.0 adapter.

You can add a GUI to RoboCopy http://www.howtogeek.com/130729/add-...and-line-tool/ and you could test all these methods to compare ease of use and processing speed.

Hah, you made me look.... I dug out Belarc Advisor (good pgm to report your innards) and this old Gateway has USB 2.0. I'll get external drives with my next computer.

BTW: My appology to eschwartz as he was the one who first recommended FreeFileSync. BetterRed thankfully quoted eschwartz and put his article in bold! (tired eyes). I know all you guys don't care who gets a pat but I really AM thankful you all lend a hand. 40 years ago it would have been me doing recommending (and I wouldn't have needed all the help). Just remember to do it all while you can.

I've just given a try to FreeFileSync and it's working very well. Better then SyncToy from Microsoft.

Same here! It is amazing taking about 4 minutes that which took FileSync 20. However, now I'm trying to rid the machine of the OpenCandy AdWare that came with it. My Ad-Aware has been running over 5 hours (still going) and states finding 3 objects across over 424K files so far. My AVG caught OpenCandy and another reported that it has the following but I have only caught OpenCandy so far.

W32/OpenCandy
PUP.optional.opencandy
PE-PUF.opencandy|1.9DE5
TROJ_GEN.F47V0601

From what I've read, OpenCandy is an innocent ad provider, which I accept on my tablet but shy away from on my home PC. It is supposedly a root kit app that doesn't delete without registry mods, but I also read that AdwCleaner will remove it but warns it is easy to remove than you intend.

In any regard I'm glad I was told about and got FreeFileSync and it's set up to use. Note it also came with RealTimeSync which is as named but more than I need for the few books I add.

For next time ...

If you run the installer from the command line with the /NOCANDY argument, e.g.,
Code:
c:\> FreeFileSync_6.7_Windows_Setup /NOCANDY
it doesn't install all that cruft. You can also use the portable version that does not include OpenCandy
