Hi.
I have recently bought an Aura HD and received it while visiting my father. I connected to his pc without any problems (Windows Vista) and transferred some free e-books from Gutenberg.org and a Danish book store to get started. Now when I'm home again, my own pc can't recognise the Aura when I (try to) connect it. I'm also running Windows Vista, so I can't understand why. The system say it can't find the driver (eReader 3.3.0). I have tried removing the driver, restarted the computer and re-connected the Kobo without success - same problem. I found a thread that suggested changes to the BIOS, but I think they where for a newer OS, as I can't find the described menus in my BIOS. The strange thing is that the Kobo acknowledge the presence of computer. As the computer can't find the Kobo, I can't use Adobe Digital Edition, Calibre or the Kobo desktop software to add books. Any suggestions how to solve this is much appreciated - because otherwise I'm really satisfied with my purchase. |

It should find the drivers automatically via windows update. Do you have problems connecting other usb devices? How about trying different usb ports? Or try using a different usb data cable.

Different cable was my first thought. Meanwhile though, you can if you like use the Calibre Content Server to get content onto your Kobo wirelessly.

The only downside of using Calibre Content Server is most of the metadata are stripped down. Also, Kobo has a quirk that you need to send the metadata again after disconnecting it the first time for the series information to show up on the device. At least that's how mine works.

The message that the Kobo recognizes the computer just means that the cable connection has been detected. Do try using a different USB cable (and port even if you have more than one).

I personally use a Sony Xperia data cable. The ones with built-in resistors. I just find them more reliable than the stock Kobo one. And more durable.

I have tried with a new cable and four of the six USB ports - still the same; It opens up the search for a driver in Windows Update but comes up empty and prompts me to insert an installation CD.
The computer can see something, but it apparently don't know what. I find it strange, since it worked fine on my fathers computer - and he lives 250 miles from me, so I can't just pop over to see what driver is installed on his. |

You computer only knows this is device it has never seen before and you have to tell it what to do. My windows vista asks to format or open memory cards as folders and other things. You could associate it with Calibre desktop book management program (free) you have installed, Kobo desktop program or something else. I don't like to have box checked to always do something except maybe open to explore folders is safe but do not format internal or removable SD cards in the KOBO which will delete everything.
IF I open my computer at start menu it will display all of the hard drives, devises = (Kobo) and SD cards attached to the computer. You can open each of these and explore what is there. Just looking is safe. if you right click on the Kobo device then select safely remove or eject or do this at bottom right of task bar at bottom of screen then you can safely remove the Kobo. Calibre and Kobo desktop programs can also eject the kobo reader. Last edited by filmo; 08-04-2014 at 12:35 PM. |

I can't eject it - the computer doesn't show it as the driver installation fails.
When connecting to the computer, Windows say it has found "eReader 3.3.0" which basically means it has found an e-reader with firmware 3.3.0, it doesn't recognise it as a Kobo - as it seems. |

One rather brute force solution is to install a normal operating system, like Ubuntu/Linux Mint.

If you click on the icon of a USB plug with a check mark, you should see "eReader 3.3.0" then a line below that with the drive letter and "KOBOeReader". Normally you will want to eject the entire eReader. Luck; Ken |

Sorry, but I must have made a bad explanation of the problem.
This is a screen shot of connected devices. At this point when the screen shot is made, the Kobo is connected to the PC. ![]() An alternative method might be that someone running Windows Vista could check the name and version of the driver, I could then try retrieving it from the internet and install it manually, as I think this is where the problems is. |

...and where does "Windows say it has found "eReader 3.3.0" ?

I think the OP meant that whenever the Kobo is first plugged in, there will be a pop-up on the notification tray that a usb device driver is being installed, but it always fails since it doesn't know where to get the drivers. At least, that's what I'm imagining what's happening from the description...

Windows shouldn't be prompting for a driver. It should either be using the MSD driver or getting it from the device. My guess would be that the driver install was only partly successful. DNSB's fix for his recent connection issue is in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2889272. I suggest trying that.
