Can you connect to McDonalds free wireless?

I'm trying to use the wireless on my glo f/w 3.3.0
I have done a factory reset and set the glo up again; account, books etc.

I can connect to my friends protected network fine, WEP -64bit.
But I cant connect to any open (unprotected) free networks, like McDonalds etc.
I get an "unable to connect to network" error and then an "something went wrong"

I've tried selecting the network from the list, and adding the network manually with no joy.

Any ideas why I can't connect or what else to try?

[Edit] I should have mentioned that I did try just opening the browser, but it brought up the same errors, after scanning for networks.

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think Kobo e-Ink devices let you connect to open wireless networks as a rule.

Many of the open wireless networks require some type of login via a web browser after you connect to the network. I have had limited success by connecting to the network and then opening the web browser to see (1) if a login page comes up and (2) if I can use the login page.

Actually, the WiFi started supporting this in 2.9 or 3.0. If it detects this type of network, it should prompt you with a warning and then display the login page. I have two networks that I occasionally use like this.

The only one here that worked with was Shaw's WiFi. Starbuck's and MickyD's never worked properly. But then I have issues with them with other devices -- local Starbuck's takes about 90 seconds to pop up the connect page after I connect and open the browser on either an iPhone or Android.

As far as I know, mickyD's here don't require a login/password, but then, I haven't been able to connect.

I think its worth quoting. Unless I'm missing something, that was my conclusion as well.

I've had no issues at either Tim Hortons or McDonalds here in Canada with my Glo.

Did you have to do anything special to connect to networks without WEP or WPA?
What fimware are you using on your Glo?

Don't know if it can help but I had problems to connect to my wifi (WAP) when my Glow was in fw 3.3 and it was resolved with the upgrade to 3.5 ...

Actually, that's not true at all--I have no problem connecting to the open wireless guest network in my house.
