Frankly the standard advice is that eink readers are not that well suited for reading (and annotating) pdfs.

While I know that is the standard advice, I happen to disagree with it. I have two readers that are excellent for reading and annotating PDFs, my Pocketbook Pro 912 and Kobo Aura HD. The PB 912 is the better of the two but is just a little too big to carry around.

The Kobo out of the box STINKS when reading PDFs. I've installed Koreader and am very happy with the PDF reading experience.

I would have to agree with the standard advice that annotating on a tablet is better than annotating on a reader. Reading and highlighting (not writing) are about the same in my experience. I've not used Goodreader on the iPad but have heard from many that it's the best PDF reader available. In my experience, Mantano on Android is pretty good, being able to crop well. Both Pocketbook and Koreader excel in that area. Since I'm more likely to be carrying my Kobo, that's been my goto device.
