Next Aura HD generation?
Hi,
I looked for an existing thread regarding the same topic, but didn't find one. Here's my question : Does someone know when the next generation of Aura HD is to be released? I'm reading on a Kindle Paperwhite right now, but the Aura HD seems quite nice. I'm interested in buying one, but the current generation has been out for a while so I'd rather wait for the next one. Any insight? Thank you very much! |

As the Aura HD was marketed as a limited edition at the time of its release, there has always been the suggestion that they might not release an updated model. However, given it's popularity, Kobo would be mad not to consider it, wouldn't they?

Most of us are as informed as you are about when/if a newer model Aura HD will/will not be produced. I can certainly say that if you want one, why not enjoy it now? I love mine and, in fact, it has become my number one ebook reader. |

I would buy it right now if I didn't currently have an ereader. However there is no hurry at this point and I would be disappointed to buy a new ereader only to have it get outdated shortly after.

If I hadn't just bought my Aura HD (to replace an old Pocketbook 302) I would seriously think about the Onyx Boox T68. The screen is the same and it runs Android (Ice cream sandwich I believe).

I utube'd the T68, several reviews, and I wasn't impressed with the UI and it's execution. The lag between selection and execution of a touch command was considerable which is annoying.
As a luddite and pbook (paper book) lover who recently converted to a ereader it seems to me that the basics of touch screen command execution hasn't been mastered by most ereader manufacturers, and this is a feature of the UI which should be exactly right, not just good enough, but perfect, guess those teenagers writing code think otherwise. Do they ever give these things to luddites for testing ?..... Last edited by leftright; 07-23-2014 at 01:31 AM. |

Seemingly the Onyx T68 is more like an android tablet with an eink screen, and although its set up as an ebook reader, you have to put a little time and effort into it to get the right apps running on it for the best "experience". There's a couple of people who have posted in the threads about the T68 who reckon its the best ereader they've owned, but its not for those who simply want it to work perfectly out of the box.
Although it uses the same screen as the Aura HD, I've no idea if how it looks in comparison the Aura. |

That is the question that potential buyers must ask themselves. Do they want to open the box, log in, tweak a few things in Calibre, and read? Or do they want to undergo a large learning curve and have a lot of options on hand? I admit the T-68 intrigues me, but I like the simplicity of the Kobo Aura HD. Open cover, read. I love the tiled home page, the overall UI, and the Calibre created collections. Perfection!

I just bought the Aura HD as my first ereader, as it appealed to me more than the T68. I study computer science and could probably find a dozen things to fiddle with in the T68, but I was looking for a minimalist electronic book with no distractions which the Aura HD does wonderfully.
The Aura HD seems like a niche product, as most people won't need or want to pay extra for the high res screen. So while Kobo are seemingly doing a watertight Aura version to add to the lineup, my guess is the Aura HD will not be iterated upon until the screen/cpu/battery/etc tech has advanced enough for a similarly priced meaningful evolution. |

Yep, you are spot on booklover6 . There's an argument that its simplicity is why the Kindle is so successful (and why its so stable), whereas other people complain that it's not as customisable as the Kobo. Each to their own. And I agree that the Aura HD is a bit of niche product, it's why it was produced as a limited edition in the first place, and why it might not get an update. I have read it's been a big seller for Kobo though, so perhaps it might be worth their while, except they now have competition in this niche market.
The Onyx T68 is a totally different beast altogether though. Looks like you have to tinker with it to get the best from it, whereas the Kobo you don't really need to do anything unless you want to... Last edited by soulfuldog; 07-23-2014 at 08:10 AM. |

I like that the T68 runs on Android and that would have been the only reason for me to get it, but the hardware turned me off. Even though it has the same screen size as the Aura HD, it's much bigger than the latter, to a point where it would constantly bother me. Also, from what I've seen and read, the T68's screen has less contrast than the Aura HD's one. Finally, there's something that I've always loved about a dedicated ereader that doesn't do anything else. Maybe it's just because it doesn't distract me and I don't end up doing something else.
