This prerelease contains the following new features and changes over CC V3.4.0e/f:
  • Option to lock screen orientation.
  • Option to set the size of downloaded covers. Note that changing this option will cause metadata for all books to be downloaded on the next wireless connection.
  • Option to control length of authors displayed in the book list.
  • [BUG FIX]Fix Read group not working if first-letters is turned on.
  • [BUG FIX]Fix incorrect total book count when uploading metadata to calibre.

This release does not have any database upgrades.

I think you just at me. I suppose that fair is fair.

The orientation change stuff was straightforward, as was the author name length limit. The cover changes caused the headaches because I had to be sure that the changes don't accidentally trigger a full metadata download.

I don't know how difficult this would be, but since you know the font size and the display dpi and size, would it make sense to put in something like "XXX characters will fit on one line"? Otherwise people are going to have to do a fair amount of trial and error to get optimal results.

Edit: Opps, never mind, I forgot the Series is on the same line. This might make more sense after you add the ability to change the data shown.

Also, sometimes the authors are on the first line (sort by author) and sometimes on the second line (sort by anything else). The two lines use different font sizes.

In case anyone is interested, I did a little test.

At 240 pixels, my database is 95 mb
At 320 pixels, my database is 120 mb
At 480 pixels, my database is 217 mb

In addition, on my Galaxy Note 3, the 240 pixel covers didn't look that different to the 480 pixel covers in cover view or list view. If I set the cover size to extra large in details view I can see a pretty big difference, but even then its not so bad at the lower resolution.

I don't have my tablet at work, but I imagine it would make much more of a difference there.

If anyone is curious, I tested this with these covers: http://tinyurl.com/plrtd2l which I found yesterday and replaced the default covers in my library with.

Thanks for the test, both the subjective and objective parts. For my devices (GN and N7 original), I too am happy with the 320 cover even at 48 display, but I imagine that cover fanatics won't be.

For completeness, how many books in your db?

So am I, but my last test was at 480, and I am too lazy to do another long sync, so I am going to leave it there until I upgrade to my next phone this fall. Its only an extra 100 MB.

Are you looking at me? Anyway, from my POV I declare all your hard work a success. I don't store enough books for the overheads to be a problem.

The displayed size of extra-large is as would be expected, namely 44x67mm on the TabPRO (a nice size on an 8.4" screen) and 61x94mm on the Note3 (almost the whole available screen). I'll probably reduce to BD Medium or Large on the phone once I've stopped admiring the pretty colours but I'll definitely be keeping the highest res thumbnails you're prepared to send.

BTW, this CC update didn't disappear from my Home screen folder on either device.

I’m using the new cover resolution and size options, and everything is working well. Re-downloading the metadata was not too long at all. I especially appreciate the larger covers for the pdf magazines I have on my larger tablet.

This is a wonderful new release. Thanks, Charles!

I tried it out on my Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 and the extra large covers with the 480 resolution looks great and certainly big enough.

The sizes on the note surprise me a bit. That implies that it is over-reporting its density. Not a problem, just a curiosity.

I have seen rumors that it happens when something in the "manifest file" changes. That file tells android how to start the app and how to connect it to certain system features. Beyond new version numbers, the manifest did change once during this cycle. It did not change in 3.4.0g. So perhaps the rumors are at least partially correct.

I have something really weird going on on my T68. When I go into book details, I get the spinning circle next to the word "delete" telling me CC is doing something and it won't let me use the back button to return to the book list. If I tap on the arrow on the left I can go back to the book list that way.

I uninstalled CC and renamed my book folder and reinstalled CC. I added four books thru the content server and I am getting the same spinning circle when I go into book details. I'll send the debug file.

Strange. Did this start happening with the 'g' prerelease? The only change in that region was the addition of the orientation lock stuff. I see a possible issue, but it has been there since the 3.3 versions.

Looking at the debug log, it appears that you did a swipe to change from one book to another. Is that true? Does the problem go away if you don't swipe?

I am going to PM you a link to a new build of V3.4.0g with a change that *might* fix this, especially if it is triggered by a swipe.
