desertblues Vote • August 2014
Help choose the August 2014 selection to read for the MR Literary Club! The poll will be open for three days and a discussion thread will begin shortly after a winner is chosen.
The vote is multiple choice. You may vote for as many or as few as you like. If you vote for the winner it is hoped that you will read the selection with the club and/or join in the discussion. The rotating nominator (this month - desertblues) may not vote in the poll. In the event of a tie, there will be a one-day non-multiple-choice run-off poll where the rotating nominator again may not vote. If the run-off also ends in a tie then the tie will be resolved by the rotating nominator. Select from the following works: The Song of Roland Spoiler:
Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en Spoiler:
The White Castle by Orhan Pamuk Spoiler:
Max Havelaar, or the Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company by Multatuli Spoiler:
Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh Spoiler:
Palace Walk by Naguib Mahfouz Spoiler:
The House of the Mosque by Kader Abdolah Spoiler:

OK - I'm interested in Amitav Ghosh anyway, I'd like to sample Orhan Pamuk and eventually I'd like to read Journey to the West. So my votes are in.

I've not participated in the voting for a while due to other distractions, so won't choose one from the list above. I will however read the winner and contribute to the discussion, by way of making amends

![]() Thanks. I have voted as suggested, for the one that really captures my interest (desertblues' list puts my recent reading history to shame, though I know she also likes detective novels, so I'm not completely demoralised ![]() |

I haven't decided how I'm voting yet, but I'm glad I checked out The White Castle from FLP when I saw it was available, just in case.

Are you partly undecided because you haven't received an answer to your question in the other thread yet?

I haven't researched much, but from what I did see, the abridged "Monkey" version is around 300 pages while the complete version seems to be around 2,000 pages. You can see the same search I did by clicking on the book title in the first post; it's also the only one I didn't link to a specific book page but rather to the search page because there were different versions and editions of it not linked together. ETA - Here is a link to a summary of the translations - Link From another page on the same linked website, here's a quote about the abridged translation titled "Monkey": Quote:

Ordinarily abridged books are against my religion, but I think it's the only realistic option, at least for me, in this case. I assume Monkey is worth reading on its own merits.

I had to give up on Journey to the West, because I can only get it in Mandarin from the library! (We have a significant Chinese population in the area where I live.) So I finished up voting for four.
I would like to read The Cairo Trilogy, so this may be the time to start on that, depending on how the votes go. Whichever book wins, it should be an interesting month. |

I'm not too interested in The Song of Roland, but I'm wondering if there is any connection to Roland the gunslinger in the King series. I read 3 or 4 of that series years ago before deciding that I really didn't like it and it wasn't worth more of my time.

Not a King fan so I can't help you there, but I'm snickering a bit ruefully at your having read several of the series before abandoning it. Comrade! How many series have I continued with beyond any vestigial interest on my part at all? Maisie Dobbs, I'm looking at you in particular, but alas, you're part of a largish crowd. |

I knew there would be snickering, but couldn't resist asking. Perhaps if there was some meaningful connection to a character in the world of real literature I could claim it as rationale for wasting weeks on a beefy, aimless King money machine.
