Calibre 1.44 - Occasional hang-up when editing metadata

Since updating to Calibre 1.44 I've twice had the program hang-up after editing the metadata for a book. I click the "OK" button on the "Edit Individual Metadata" screen, and the program just sits there. It still appears to be "alive" - all the functions on the Edit Metadata dialog work, but the page can't be dismissed with either the "OK" or "Cancel" buttons. The only way out is to kill the program. This is with 32-bit Calibre on Windows 7.

It's a random thing - I've been able to edit the metadata numerous times without problems - but it has now occurred twice. I've never had this happen in any previous version of the program.

A difficult one to diagnose, I know, but I thought I should make you aware of it.

I've checked my Calibre database for problems, and it's found none.

Harry, the same thing happens randomly on XP .
The Window linkage seems to detach interaction with the Main upon save and remains in the Fore even though you can make the main 'active'
Restarting (ctrl-R on the main GUI) Calibre, will close and the Daughter (MDE) closes about 5-10 seconds later

Started about 4 versions ago.
v.43 seemed to happen less.

AFAIK it is Random

One thing I have noticed when using Next/Previous, Posting the update and moving has gotten really slow (a big delay)

Try running calibre in debug mode and see if anything is printed out when the hang occurs.

You can run calibre in debug mode as

calibre-debug -g

from a console

or by right clicking the preferences button.

It enters the state upon clicking OK (it does save)

Once it gets in that state, only restarting Calibre closes it, none of the controls are active.

Note: You can metadata edit a New record (arrow down, tap E), the window just won't close.

@theducks: What you are describing is different from what HarryT is describing. In your case it is likely some Qt + windows xp issue. According to HarryT, clicking OK results in an edit metadata dialog that is still functional, with all controls active.

@HarryT - if it happens again try right click on the calibre icon in the task bar and select Close Window. I can't remember if the XP taskbar has equivalent, in Win 7 the taskbar got a total revamp.

@HarryT & theducks - did you try Title bar red-X and/or Alt+Space/Close

@kovid - has Qt4 changed in recent times, AFAIK XP hasn't had an update since April 8. Unless theducks is running a Point of Sale XP - real or spoofed

@BR: if only the runtime on windows depended only the OS. Windows is full of software that willy nilly patches and hooks system dlls to do all manner of mischief. Regardless, theducks issue is not one I can do anything about, as it is not in calibre code. HarryT's on the other hand might be in calibre code.

Kovid - I wonder if it might perhaps be a database locking issue? One thing I have noticed on both the occasions it's happened is that, after I click the "OK" button, the book cover shown on the metadata screen has changed from its proper cover image to the "book with a green cover" image that indicates that the book doesn't have a cover. Might there be a clue there?

@HT: The debug log would help, run calibre in debug mode until it happens again and there should be something useful in the log.
