Sony PRS505 Reader Locked Up

A few pages into a book the reader has locked up. It won't respond to any buttons, it won't power off with the on/off button, and it doesn't respond to the hard reset button on the back. It's showing a few lines of text from the page it was on, and the battery indicator is showing 2 bars. It has the standard (as delivered firmware) and I've never attempted to change the firmware. It was working fine, I've read 6 or 7 books since I last loaded any new ones. Never had a problem before now, and it's not been dropped or anything.

All of the recovery posts I've read say to ensure that the reader is switched off before doing a hard reset, but as it won't switch off I'm stuffed!

Any ideas?

Hi davidm_uk,

Have you plugged your reader in? In the past I tried both usb and wall charger and sometimes it would correct whatever is wrong.

Since the reader is getting kind of old you may be needing a new battery. Mine was replaced a few months ago and it almost seems like a new reader!

Having dug around on various web sites I realised that the screen display can be maintained even if the battery is flat, so the fact that it was showing 2 bars was meaningless. I recharged the reader (mains charger) overnight and it started ok next morning. The book I was trying to read still caused a lockup, so I deleted it via the PC, converted it from ePub to LRF format, reloaded it to the reader and it now reads ok.

I think that the original lockup (cpu in a loop or something) caused the screen to freeze, and the battery to be exhausted very quickly, so that there was then no response to either the on/off switch or the reset button.

I agree with your diagnosis. The 505 is a bit limited in memory (and possibly a very outdated Adobe engine) so hard to render epubs can cause it to crash.
