Drag and drop in the editor
Hello all,
when you open a book in Calibre, it will be saved to the default location that was set in the application. Conversely, we can start the editor alone, which allows, for example, modify a book lying in any location and save it in the same place (I don't know if it's very clear ...) . The problem (small problem) is that we can't drag and drop a book directly in the editor: use the "open" icon and get the book in the tree. I use the editor in this way (without launching Calibre front) with Linux to make small changes in epub, and I record directly to their home directory. I use the portable version with Windows. This might be more suited to using a drop target to launch the editor. The .exe on Windows (for calibre portable you will need to create your own -- it doesn't ship with one?) should handle that already.
Or just use Explorer's Open With verbs. On Linux, once more, your chosen File Browser should have an Open With functionality. You can also Drag & Drop onto the .desktop launcher that ships with calibre. |

This is actually a possibility: associate the file extension (eg epub) to ebook-edit.
However, we must make a choice: calibre or its editor as the default program, while the possibility of drag and drop does not take away that choice. |

You can associate two or more programs with the same extension, and right-click will offer both of them as an option. Although double-clicking can only use one.

Double click uses the default association. It is all in the user re-training ![]() BTW Note: Save a Copy does not behave the same as the usual Windows 'Save as...' in that that: 1) it does not become the Active (being edited) filename. 2) Does not appear on the 'History' list (see #1) |

I quite agree with you, but I use the portable version of Calibre and I am not using consistently the same computer (this is the purpose of portable apps ...). That is why I think this option would be advantageous.

If you use Windows you can create shell menu verbs, doing it by hand is hard work (most especially on Win7 & 8, XP's easier but confusing), but doing it with Nils Sopers' File Types Manager is a breeze, see screenshot for example.
But if you use portable on a flash drive then all bets are off, that's also true with Open With. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 07-13-2014 at 05:29 PM. |

I use portable, but the computers I use it on are predictable so I've set up the Open with option on both of them.

Indeed, we can set the option "open with" on the computers on which we work, but it's still more convenient when the program itself includes the ability to drag and drop a file onto the window.
This option would make more powerful editor for allowing it to be used also without starting Calibre. A precaution however: the settings made on the Editor launched alone do not affect the editor launched from Calibre. |

Put a shortcut to ebook-editor.exe into your Send To folder, and you can send an epub/azw3 to it, Pin ebook-editor.exe to your task bar and you can drop an epub/azw3 onto it. Or just drop the epub/azw3 directly onto the ebook-editor.exe file itself. All of which can be used without having the Calibre Library Manager program (calibre.exe) running. BR |

In principle, it is not important, it's just a small additional ergonomic option and I think that it should not be so simple to integrate. |
