Amazon kernel does not have that mode enabled in the driver.

Where is the WiFi coming from? Any WiFi router should have an ethernet socket. Relying on your neighbors' WiFi doesn't seem very practical to me. If we are dealing with WiFi on the go, then Desktops need not apply...

using a kindle you already have is always going to be cheaper than buying a cable or a wifi adapter.

O.P. wants a WiFi link: Cell Phone <-> Kindle and USBnet: Kindle <-> Rpi
With the Kindle as the access point.

It would probably be easier to configure/build the Rpi to run as an access point than the Kindle.

Plus, there is a bit of confusion about "Free Wifi" networks.
Helped a lot by various companies marketing terminology mangled usage of technical terms.
