How to update

Got a very simple question. Maybe to simple cause I can't find an answer, but I don't want to risk screwing anything up. I run calibre on my pc os windows 7. To update to newest version of calibre do i have to uninstall first? Or just dl new version then run loader/instaler without uninstalling current version? Does it matter if i already have calbre open/running with some books open when run install on new version?

Just run the MSI. (same bit version which is where you should land if you click Get Update in the new version available dialog)

Settings and Library are left as is (even if you did uninstall)

Routine Backups are advised (remember to do the 'configuration folder' as well as your Libraries )

You only need to backup the configuration DIRECTORY (folder's are made from paper) if you've made any changes to it (like changing Calibre's settings, installing or updating plugin(s)) and not every time you install a new version of Calibre.

Dunno, because I wouldn't think of updating a program that's already running, so my advise is Yes it does matter.

Given its size I would suggest backing it up with one's libraries

My config is ~30MB. I put a symlink to my config folder in my CalibreData folder. My backup is configured to drill down symlinks; backing up changes to calibre config adds a few seconds to a daily 10 minute backup of all changes to my main data drive.

IIRC calibre stores MRU lists, window sizes, last used library and such in the config data.

@cybmole IIRC MS wasn't the first to use the term 'folder', Woz did that on Lisa. Mind you that shouldn't protect MS from scorn, they didn't have to be a late to the scene copy-cat.

Can't be certain but I have a feeling the change at MS might have coincided with them falling out of the Big Blue bed Up until Windows 3.1 at least, they were called directories, see attachment.

I loathe the word - implies they're a container, which they're not, they're a !@#$% index.

I believe the change was in Windows 95, I think that was also when Windows Explorer (which is now File Explorer for those of us who like to keep up to date ) was introduced. Cybmole was obviously not around in '95.

Like JSWolf and yourself, I much prefer to use the more generic and descriptive term "directory", but resort to using "folder" when to do otherwise would lead to confusion with the kiddies amongst us .

Regardless of what Windows calls it, it is a directory or subdirectory. A folder is not it. It's been a directory/subdirectory long before a GUI was ever thought of.

You want to really confuse the kiddies, the best way is to tell them they need to use a command prompt. Watch them go HUH? WHAT DO I DO HERE?

Me, I call a directory/subdirectory what it is and if someone doesn't get it, Google it.

Wolfie,
Some of my folders are plastic.
The object is ti use the common term, Folder, as not to confuse the new kids.

Right-click the desktop: New: FOLDER: (type)foo

for you: you can use the command prompt: MD %userprofile%\desktop\foo

True, folders can be made out of plastic or other material other then paper.

As for confusing the new kids... hello Google, it's directory.

If I really want to confuse the unwashed masses I prefer 'partitioned dataset'

You can type 'dir' in the DOS box ('command prompt' in teenie bopper lingo) and get something sensible, but if you type 'folder' it goes - "der - wot's 'at 'en"

And dir is short for directory. It's a directory listing, not a folder listing. So Windows terminology is just wrong in the case of directories.

(I'm not that old but I looked it up.)

Speak of confusing names....

I vote for "directory" but only as a matter of preference. If the subject has to do with computers then it is fairly obvious we are not talking about the contents of a filing cabinet...

To get pedantic over the precise nomenclature is a matter for pedants, so let's leave it at that.

And Microsoft being wrong has never stopped either them or their customers, so you're preaching to the converted.

More pedantry to fuel eschwartz's killjoy tendencies

In this post regarding NeXTSTEP on the toastytech blog you'll find this

Quote:
By default, the file window appears as a "Directory Browser". Instead of just providing a list of files, it focuses on navigating the directory hierarchy. This is necessary because NeXTSTEP systems have a huge number of files and folders with deep hierarchies.

Each "Directory Browser" window has four columns. Each displays the files and folders located in the selected directory. This lets you navigate deep inside a set of nested folders without visibly loosing sight of where you were [came from]. Double clicking a folder opens a new ["Directory Browser"] file window.
The brackets and strikeouts are mine
