How to update
Got a very simple question. Maybe to simple cause I can't find an answer, but I don't want to risk screwing anything up. I run calibre on my pc os windows 7. To update to newest version of calibre do i have to uninstall first? Or just dl new version then run loader/instaler without uninstalling current version? Does it matter if i already have calbre open/running with some books open when run install on new version?

Settings and Library are left as is (even if you did uninstall) Routine Backups are advised (remember to do the 'configuration folder' as well as your Libraries ) |

You only need to backup the configuration DIRECTORY (folder's are made from paper) if you've made any changes to it (like changing Calibre's settings, installing or updating plugin(s)) and not every time you install a new version of Calibre.

My config is ~30MB. I put a symlink to my config folder in my CalibreData folder. My backup is configured to drill down symlinks; backing up changes to calibre config adds a few seconds to a daily 10 minute backup of all changes to my main data drive. IIRC calibre stores MRU lists, window sizes, last used library and such in the config data. BR |

![]() Like JSWolf and yourself, I much prefer to use the more generic and descriptive term "directory", but resort to using "folder" when to do otherwise would lead to confusion with the kiddies amongst us ![]() |

Regardless of what Windows calls it, it is a directory or subdirectory. A folder is not it. It's been a directory/subdirectory long before a GUI was ever thought of.

Wolfie,
Some of my folders are plastic. The object is ti use the common term, Folder, as not to confuse the new kids. Right-click the desktop: New: FOLDER: (type)foo for you: you can use the command prompt: MD %userprofile%\desktop\foo |

![]() You can type 'dir' in the DOS box ('command prompt' in teenie bopper lingo) and get something sensible, but if you type 'folder' it goes - "der - wot's 'at 'en" ![]() BR |

And dir is short for directory. It's a directory listing, not a folder listing. So Windows terminology is just wrong in the case of directories.

![]() ![]() (I'm not that old but I looked it up.) Speak of confusing names.... I vote for "directory" but only as a matter of preference. If the subject has to do with computers then it is fairly obvious we are not talking about the contents of a filing cabinet... To get pedantic over the precise nomenclature is a matter for pedants, so let's leave it at that. And Microsoft being wrong has never stopped either them or their customers, so you're preaching to the converted. Last edited by eschwartz; 07-07-2014 at 10:49 PM. |
