Kindle and Kindle Fire
I have the basic Kindle and Calibre worked fine. I now have a Kindle Fire. The icon to send a book to the Kindle no longer appears.

Surely you mean WinXP or linux -- it is Mac that doesn't support MTP.

Also, why only XP? What about Vista 7 and 8?

The Fire 1st Gen is not MTP and so works fine on XP... for all later versions you are correct.
