Are there any literature periodicals in .epub?
Or periodicals on other subjects in ereader-friendly format? Free or otherwise?

Have you checked out the calibre "Fetch news" feature?

Still, I found no one that had .epub as their primary format.

Subterranean Press have a free quarterly magazine, the most recent issues are available for download as epub or mobi.
