Game of Thrones books…
I recently started reading the Game of Thrones books and I'm really loving it! I'm around 40% through book 4 at the moment. Anyone else reading these books? What are your thoughts on them?
This is my the first fantasy book I've read, apart from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, what are top fantasy books are good? Any recommendations are greatly appreciated! |

I read them and loved them! I don't know what it'd be like to read them after seeing the TV show though (I read them before).
My favourite fantasy books are the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. |

Indeed, the Song of Ice and Fire books are really good. The only problem with them is the author takes so long to write the books! My favorite is Wheel of Time as well. I will have to re-purchase them on ebook so I can finally know how it ends.

You definitely should! My boyfriend has been reading Wheel of Time for years, and his books were read and re-read so often that the pages fell out. When I re-read them all this year, I got them all as e-books. Much nicer than holding those insanely heavy books!

I read the first one, just got to the end of A Clash of Kings and then was just too bored by the series to keep going. The books were just too long, and there still seems to be no end in sight. I may pick them up again when the series is finished. That said, A Game of Thrones (the first one) is one of the best books I have ever read, and kept me absolutely hooked. I particularly liked Tyrion! It's not that I think these books are bad, it's just that they are too long and drag after book 2. I also tried WOT but got so cross with the first one for being such an obvious copy of LOTR that I gave up.

Fantasy books to look for:
- Susan Cooper's _The Dark is Rising_ Pentalogy --- urban fantasy w/ meaning - Roger Zelazny's _The Chronicles of Amber_ --- Arthurian fantasy w/ a twist on Heaven and Hell and the creation and foundations of the world - Michael Moorcock's _Eternal Champion Cycle_ --- swords and sorcery w/ anti-heroes - Poul Anderson's _The Broken Sword_ --- a revisiting of the well-springs of Norse myth and English folklore - C.J. Cherryh's _The Dreamstone_ and _The Tree of Swords and Jewels_ --- the passing of the Faery World - Ursula K. Le Guinn's _Earthsea Trilogy_ (and succeeding books) --- an imagining of a world in which names have power and the tongue of dragons is the language of magic Lots of other lists of fantasy, esp. if one has a tolerance for EFP (extruded fantasy product). |

I have been reading The Riyria Revelations series by Michael J. Sullivan. Very good fantasy books! Recommended starting place is Theft of Swords.

Wow!!! I've read all 5 Martin books on the Game of Thrones...can't wait for the 6th. I've also seen all 4 seasons of the TV show and think HBO did a reasonable job (the sets, actors and locations were amazing). I agree Martin is one slow writer but, to give him credit, he's got quite a script of characters, situations and dramas to account for. Quite a task if you ask me. As far as the TV series goes I'm wondering what will happen after season 5. I've heard that Martin has left an outline of book/season progressions to their climax (in case he dies in the interim...sure hope that doesn't happen).
So...what I've liked is James Rollins (early ones) Subterranean and Excavation. Right now I'm reading "The Amazing Story of Quantum Mechanics" (gotta learn somthin' every day right?) Aside from that I thank you all for the wonderful suggestions you've made regarding future reading material. You're all such a charm and wonder on this magical forum. I really enjoyed all of the ASOIF books, but the first three were my favourite. Are you planning on going back and reading them?

Guy Gavriel Kay's The Fionavar Tapestry (The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire and The Darkest Road) or try his single volume Tigana.
If you want some humor them try Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Also, you may want to try The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson (Lord Foul's Bane, The Ill-Earth War, and The Power That Preserves). Some don't like the books because the main character is not the most likeable person around. Try the first trilogy and possibly the second. There's a third which I haven't read and I'm not sure if he has finished it yet. |
